0:21 During the Jahiliyyah, I was an ally to the Banu Asad ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza of Makkah.

0:33 I was among the archers known for their skill.

0:37 I embraced Islam early on.

0:39 I migrated to Madinah.

0:41 I witnessed the Battle of Badr and all subsequent campaigns with the Prophet, peace be upon him.

0:47 The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent me with a letter to al-Muqawqis, the King of Egypt.

0:55 However, he responded graciously.

0:57 He sent back with me gifts for the Prophet, peace be upon him.

1:13 I heard someone shouting that Muhammad had been killed.

1:20 I rushed to his location, gripped by panic.

1:24 It was as if my soul had departed.

1:27 I found him, peace be upon him, wiping the blood from his face.

1:32 I asked, "Who did this to you, O Messenger of Allah?"

1:37 He replied, "'Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas."

1:40 "He threw a stone at me,"

1:42 "shattering my face and wounding my eye."

1:46 I asked, "In which direction did 'Utbah go?"

1:49 He pointed out the direction he had taken.

1:53 I pursued him until I caught up with him.

1:57 I struck him with my sword,

1:59 and severed his head.

2:01 I dismounted, took his head, his spoils, and his horse,

2:05 and brought them to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

2:09 He was pleased by this, prayed for me, and said,

2:13 "May Allah be pleased with you, may Allah be pleased with you."

2:17 He granted me his spoils.

2:20 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, intended

2:23 to set out for the conquest of Makkah,

2:25 I was overcome by fear for my family who were still there.

2:30 So, I secretly sent a letter to the Quraysh

2:33 via a polytheist woman,

2:36 informing them of the Prophet's intention, peace be upon him,

2:40 to march for the conquest of Makkah.

2:43 Allah informed His Prophet of this.

2:47 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, summoned

2:50 'Ali, al-Zubayr, and al-Miqdad,

2:53 and said to them,

2:55 "Go until you catch a woman"

2:58 "at the garden of Khakh,"

3:00 "who carries a letter to the Quraysh."

3:03 "Bring it to me."

3:05 They set out until they caught her where the Prophet, peace be upon him, had told them.

3:11 They demanded the letter from her.

3:13 She denied having it.

3:15 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said to her,

3:18 "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah has not lied."

3:21 "Either you produce the letter,"

3:23 "or we will remove your garments."

3:26 When she saw their resolve,

3:29 she said to them,

3:31 "Turn away."

3:32 She undid her braids,

3:34 and took it out from her hair.

3:37 They brought the letter to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

3:42 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, summoned me

3:46 and said,

3:47 "What prompted you to do this?"

3:50 I said,

3:51 "O Messenger of Allah,"

3:53 "do not be hasty with me."

3:55 "By Allah, I did not do this"

3:57 "out of disbelief or apostasy,"

3:59 "nor out of contentment with disbelief after Islam."

4:03 "But I have children and some relatives in Makkah,"

4:07 "and I was a stranger among you, O people of Quraysh,"

4:11 "so I wanted to do them a favor"

4:14 "by which they might protect my children and relatives."

4:17 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to his Companions,

4:21 "He has spoken the truth."

4:23 "Do not say anything but good."

4:26 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

4:28 "Permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to kill him."

4:32 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

4:35 "No."

4:36 "He witnessed Badr."

4:39 "And you do not know,"

4:41 "perhaps Allah has looked upon those who witnessed Badr"

4:45 "and said,"

4:46 "'Do what you wish,'"

4:48 "'for I have forgiven you.'"

4:51 And Allah revealed verses regarding my situation in Surah al-Mumtahanah.

4:56 So, who am I?
