1:02 "will never forget anything he heard from me."
1:06 I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah."
1:09 I spread out my garment.
1:11 By the One who sent him with the truth,
1:14 I have never forgotten anything I heard from him.
1:18 I used to spend my time with the poor among the Ahl al-Suffah.
1:24 I would collapse from hunger between the grave and the pulpit.
1:28 To the point that people would say I was insane.
1:31 My need became so great,
1:34 that I would lean against the ground,
1:37 and I would tie a stone against my stomach to suppress the hunger.
1:41 One day, I sat on the path people used.
1:46 Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me.
1:49 I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah,
1:53 though I only asked him so that he might invite me to eat.
1:57 He answered me, but did not realize my need.
2:01 Then ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by.
2:04 I asked him, and he answered, but he did not do so either.
2:09 Finally, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed by me.
2:13 He recognized the hunger on my face.
2:16 He called out to me, and I said,
2:19 "At your service, O Messenger of Allah."
2:22 I entered the house with him.
2:24 He found some milk in a bowl.
2:27 He asked his family, "Where did you get this from?"
2:31 They replied, "So-and-so sent it to you."
2:35 He said to me, "Go to the Ahl al-Suffah and invite them."
2:40 Despair overcame me,
2:42 for I had hoped to have a drink of that milk to gain some strength.
2:48 And what would this milk amount to among the Ahl al-Suffah?
2:53 But there was no choice but to obey Allah and His Messenger.
2:59 I went to them, and they came, responding to the call.
3:03 When they sat down, he, peace be upon him, said to me,
3:08 "Take the bowl and offer them the milk."
3:11 I began giving it to a man, and he would drink until he was satisfied.
3:16 Then I would give it to the next, and he would drink until he was satisfied.
3:21 Until I had served them all.
3:24 Then I handed it to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
3:29 He raised his head toward me, smiling, and said,
3:33 "Only you and I remain." I said, "You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah."
3:39 He said, "Drink," so I drank.
3:43 He said, "Drink," so I drank.
3:47 He kept saying "Drink," and I kept drinking until I said,
3:53 "By the One who sent you with the truth, I can find no more room for it."
3:58 He took the bowl from me, mentioned the name of Allah,
4:02 and drank the remainder.
4:05 In my own home, I would spend the entire night in worship.
4:09 I would divide the night into three parts:
4:12 one third for me, one third for my wife,
4:15 and one third for my servant.
4:17 I would perform the Witr prayer before I slept.
4:20 I would fast three days of every month.
4:24 I would pray the Duha prayer,
4:26 acting upon the advice of my beloved, peace be upon him.
4:30 And I would recite 12,000 tasbihs daily.
