0:22 I attended the Second Pledge of al-'Aqabah with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:31 Sahl ibn Hunayf and I

0:33 used to smash the polytheists' idols in Medina

0:37 and bring them to the Muslims,

0:39 so they could use them as fuel for their fires.

0:43 I took part in the Battle of Badr,

0:45 and on that day, I captured Abu al-'As ibn al-Rabi',

0:49 the husband of Zaynab, daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

0:53 I then released him and set him free without ransom,

0:58 out of honor and respect for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

1:04 During the Battle of Uhud,

1:06 the Prophet (peace be upon him) appointed me over the archers,

1:10 who numbered fifty men.

1:13 He stationed us upon Mount 'Aynayn,

1:17 keeping Mount Uhud behind his back

1:21 while facing towards Medina,

1:24 and he instructed us, saying:

1:26 "Stand firm in your positions!

1:29 Protect our backs!

1:31 If you see us taking the spoils of war,

1:34 do not join us.

1:36 And if you see us being slain,

1:38 do not come to our aid,

1:40 even if birds should snatch us away."

1:43 When the battle commenced,

1:45 we archers showered the polytheists with arrows

1:49 and shielded the Muslims' rear.

1:52 The slaughter continued among the standard-bearers of the polytheists

1:56 until they were routed.

1:58 The Muslims fought on that day

2:00 with tremendous valor,

2:02 pursuing the retreating polytheists,

2:05 striking them down at will,

2:08 overrunning their camp, and collecting the spoils.

2:12 Then, some archers said to one another,

2:16 "How long will you remain stationed here for nothing?

2:20 Allah has already routed the enemy!

2:23 Go down and take the spoils alongside your brothers!"

2:26 But I protested to them:

2:28 "Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

2:31 commanded us:

2:33 'Protect our backs,

2:35 and do not leave your positions'?"

2:37 Yet they disobeyed me

2:39 and rushed off to collect the spoils,

2:42 until no more than ten archers remained with me.

2:46 Khalid ibn al-Walid looked towards the mountain

2:49 and saw that the archers had abandoned it.

2:51 He wheeled his cavalry around toward us,

2:54 followed by 'Ikrimah as well,

2:56 charging with two hundred horsemen toward our post on the mountain.

3:01 I confronted the polytheists' cavalry,

3:04 shooting my arrows at them until my quiver was depleted.

3:07 Then I thrust at them with my spear until it shattered.

3:11 I then broke the scabbard of my sword

3:14 and fought them until I was slain.

3:17 The ten men who stood with me were also martyred.

3:20 The polytheists seized control of the mountain,

3:23 struck the Muslims from the rear,

3:26 and defeat befell the Muslims.

3:29 When I fell to the ground,

3:32 they mutilated my body in the most heinous manner.
