0:16 I am one of the Companions from the Muhajirun.

0:24 I was taken captive during the Jahiliyyah, and then they sold me in Makkah.

0:29 Umm Anmar al-Khuza'iyyah bought me.

0:32 She handed me over to one of the blacksmiths in Makkah.

0:36 To teach me the craft of sword-making.

0:39 How quickly I mastered it.

0:42 When I heard about the call of Islam,

0:45 I went to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and heard from him.

0:50 I extended my hand to him,

0:53 And I testified that there is no god but Allah,

0:56 And that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

0:59 When Umm Anmar learned of my Islam,

1:03 She was enraged and consumed with fury.

1:07 She went to her brother, Siba' ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza.

1:11 He came to me,

1:13 And said,

1:14 "News has reached us about you that we do not believe."

1:18 I said, "And what is that?"

1:20 Siba' said,

1:22 "It is rumored that you have apostatized,

1:24 And followed the boy of Ibn Hashim."

1:27 I said calmly,

1:29 "I have not apostatized;

1:31 Rather, I have believed in Allah alone, with no partner,

1:35 And I have rejected your idols."

1:37 No sooner had my words reached their ears

1:41 Than they fell upon me.

1:43 They began to strike me with their hands and kick me with their feet.

1:48 They pelted me with whatever they could reach—hammers and pieces of iron—

1:54 Until I fell to the ground, unconscious,

1:57 With blood streaming from me.

2:00 One day, I made a sword for al-'As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi,

2:07 And I came to collect my payment.

2:09 He said,

2:10 "I will not give you anything until you disbelieve in Muhammad."

2:14 I said,

2:15 "I will not disbelieve in Muhammad, peace be upon him,

2:20 Until Allah causes you to die and then resurrects you."

2:24 He said,

2:25 "If Allah causes me to die and then resurrects me,

2:28 Come to me then, and I will pay you your due."

2:32 Then Allah the Almighty revealed:

2:34 “Hast thou seen him who disbelieveth in Our revelations and saith: Assuredly I shall be given wealth and children?” (19:77)

2:38 "And he said, 'I will surely be given wealth and children.'"

2:42 “Hath he perused the Unseen, or hath he made a pact with the Beneficent?” (19:78)

2:48 "No!

2:50 We shall record what he says."

2:52 “Nay, but We shall record that which he saith and prolong for him a span of torment.” (19:79)

2:55 “And We shall inherit from him that whereof he spake, and he will come unto Us, alone (without his wealth and children).” (19:80)

3:00 When the persecution of the polytheists against us intensified,

3:05 I came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

3:08 While he was reclining on his cloak in the shade of the Ka'bah.

3:12 I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

3:15 Will you not pray to Allah for us?

3:17 Will you not seek victory for us?"

3:19 He sat up, peace be upon him,

3:22 His face flushed, and he said,

3:25 "Those who came before you—

3:28 A man would be combed with iron combs,

3:30 Stripping the flesh or nerves from his bones,

3:34 Yet that would not turn him away from his religion.

3:37 A saw would be placed on the parting of his head,

3:41 And he would be split in two,

3:43 Yet that would not turn him away from his religion.

3:46 Allah will surely complete this matter,

3:49 Until a traveler can ride from San'a to Hadramawt,

3:54 Fearing nothing but Allah and the wolf for his sheep."

3:58 One day, I entered upon 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,

4:04 And he asked me about the severest suffering I had endured from the polytheists.

4:08 I uncovered my back and said,

4:11 "Look, O Commander of the Faithful."

4:14 'Umar said,

4:16 "I have never seen anything like it."

4:18 I said,

4:20 "They lit a fire for me,

4:22 And nothing extinguished it but the fat of my back."

4:27 In the latter part of my life, I became wealthy after having been poor,

4:31 And I possessed gold and silver

4:34 Such as I had never dreamed of.

4:37 I placed my wealth in a spot in my house

4:40 Known to those in need among the poor and the destitute.

4:45 I did not tie it shut,

4:47 Nor did I put a lock upon it.

4:50 I gave them permission to access it,

4:52 So they would come to my house

4:54 And take from it whatever they wished,

4:57 Without asking or seeking permission.
