0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:23 I am originally from the lands of Persia.

0:26 I was once an enslaved person.

0:28 I was sold just as goods are sold.

0:31 Until a woman from the people of Makkah bought me.

0:34 She then set me free.

0:36 However, her husband was impressed by me.

0:38 So he adopted me as his son.

0:40 Then we both embraced Islam together.

0:43 When Islam abolished adoption,

0:47 I began to be called his freedman.

0:50 And we became brothers in faith.

0:53 My heart became attached to the Qur'an.

0:56 The word of Allah became my preoccupation at all times.

1:00 When I migrated to Madinah,

1:03 I was the leader of the people there in prayer.

1:06 Until the Prophet, peace be upon him, arrived.

1:10 Then he became the leader.

1:12 One night,

1:15 I was reciting the Qur'an in the mosque with a beautiful voice.

1:19 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, passed by me.

1:23 She heard my recitation.

1:25 She could not help but sit and listen to me.

1:28 Until she was late to reach the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

1:34 When she came to him,

1:36 He asked her the reason for her delay.

1:39 She said, "There is a man in the mosque,

1:43 who has the most beautiful voice in reciting the Qur'an that I have ever heard."

1:47 So the Prophet, peace be upon him, took his cloak,

1:52 and went out to listen to my recitation.

1:55 He recognized me and said,

1:57 "Praise be to Allah who has placed someone like you in my Ummah."

2:02 One day, while advising his Companions, he, peace be upon him, said:

2:07 "Take the Qur'an from four:

2:10 From me, from Ibn Mas'ud,

2:13 from Ubayy ibn Ka'b,

2:15 and from Mu'adh ibn Jabal."

2:17 This was because of our distinction over others in reciting the Qur'an,

2:22 and our devotion to it.

2:24 Even though I am a non-Arab Persian,

2:28 the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them,

2:31 valued me and gave me precedence over others.

2:36 For the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

2:40 when he was on his deathbed:

2:43 "If so-and-so were alive,

2:45 I would have appointed him as the Caliph."

2:47 Meaning me by that.

2:50 I participated with the Prophet, peace be upon him,

2:54 in all the military expeditions.

2:57 Then I participated with the Muslims in fighting the apostates.

3:02 In the Battle of Yamamah,

3:04 when the Muslims were initially overwhelmed,

3:08 and the banner of the Muhajirun fell from Zayd ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,

3:13 I stepped forward and took the banner.

3:16 The people said to me,

3:18 "We fear that the enemy might reach the Muslims through you."

3:21 I replied,

3:22 "I would be a wretched bearer of the Qur'an if

3:25 the Muslims were reached through me."

3:28 "That is not how we used to act with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

3:34 Then I dug a hole in the ground,

3:37 and stood in it with the banner.

3:40 I kept fighting and fighting,

3:43 and blows came at me from every direction,

3:46 until wounds overwhelmed me.

3:49 I fell to the ground,

3:51 covered in blood.

3:53 The battle ended with the victory of the Muslims.

3:56 People came to check on the fallen,

4:00 and they found me with a lingering breath.

4:03 I asked them,

4:05 "What happened to my brother and master, Abu Hudhayfah?"

4:08 They said, "He was killed."

4:10 I said,

4:12 "Lay me down beside him."

4:14 They said,

4:16 "He has been killed right beside you;

4:18 his feet are at your head."

4:21 A broad smile appeared on my face.

4:25 For this is my brother;

4:27 we embraced Islam together,

4:29 we lived together,

4:31 and we died together.

4:33 Then I departed from this life thereafter.
