When Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, left Makkah,

In the Jahiliyyah, we used to open the Ka'bah on Mondays and Thursdays,

One day, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came wishing to enter the Ka'bah,

But I spoke harshly to him and treated him roughly.

He showed forbearance toward me and said:

"Perhaps you will see this key in my hand one day,"

"And I will place it wherever I wish."

"Quraysh will be ruined and disgraced on that day."

"Rather, it will be prosperous and honored on that day."

When Makkah was conquered in the eighth year of the Hijrah,

And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered it,

"Bring me the key to the Ka'bah."

I brought it to him.

He took it from me and entered the Ka'bah.

Then 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up to him,

"Combine for us the chamberlainship with the duty of providing water (siqayah)."

Then Allah the Almighty revealed regarding this His saying:

“Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye restore deposits to their owners, and, if ye judge between mankind, that ye judge justly. Lo! comely is this which Allah admonisheth you. Lo! Allah is ever Hearer, Seer.” (4:58)

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called me and said:

"Here is your key."

"Today is a day of righteousness and fulfillment."

"Take it, as an everlasting and ancient trust."

"None shall take it from you except a tyrant."

As I turned to leave,

He called me, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

I returned to him,

And he said:

"Did I not tell you?"

I recalled what he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had said to me in Makkah before the Hijrah:

"Perhaps you will see this key in my hand one day, and I will place it wherever I wish."

"Indeed, I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah."
