0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:22 I am an Ansari from the Aws tribe.

0:24 I embraced Islam before Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, the leader of the Aws, did.

0:30 I was honored with the title of "Guard of the Prophet," peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:35 For I used to stand guard over him,

0:37 And carry out the tasks he entrusted to me.

0:40 Among these was the assassination of Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf,

0:44 The Jewish poet,

0:46 Who used to harm the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

0:50 And lampoon the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them,

0:53 And compose lewd verses about the Muslim women,

0:56 And incite the disbelievers against them.

0:59 When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrived in Medina,

1:04 He drew up treaties and covenants between himself and its inhabitants, both Jews and polytheists.

1:10 Yet some of these fools

1:13 Did not respond to this noble treatment,

1:16 And instead showed hostility toward the people of faith.

1:19 Among them was Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf the Jew,

1:22 For he persisted in his transgression,

1:25 Unrestrained by any sense of morality or covenant.

1:29 That hostility increased

1:32 When he saw the polytheist captives at Badr bound in chains.

1:37 He began to openly display his enmity toward the Muslims,

1:40 And mourned the polytheist dead of Badr.

1:43 Then he went to Mecca to console the polytheists with his poetry,

1:48 And urged them to fight the Muslims.

1:51 Then he returned to Medina.

1:54 When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, learned of his return,

1:58 He said, "Who will deal with Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf for me?

2:01 For he has harmed me."

2:04 I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah.

2:07 I will kill him."

2:09 He said, "Then do so."

2:11 Then I was overcome with anxiety,

2:13 And I spent days without eating.

2:16 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called for me,

2:20 And said to me,

2:22 "Why have you abandoned food and drink?"

2:24 I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

2:27 I made a promise to you,

2:29 And I do not know if I will be able to fulfill it or not."

2:32 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

2:35 "Do your best and whatever you are capable of."

2:38 He consulted Sa'd ibn Mu'adh regarding the matter,

2:41 And I consulted him as well.

2:43 Then I gathered with a group from the Aws,

2:46 Among them 'Abbad ibn Bishr

2:48 And Abu Na'ilah.

2:50 We agreed on a plan to get to the Jew, Ka'b.

2:55 Then we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:58 And said, "O Messenger of Allah,

3:01 We will kill him,

3:03 So permit us to speak ill of the Muslims and their Prophet,

3:07 For we have no other way to reach him."

3:10 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

3:13 "Say what you must, there is no blame on you."

3:15 So Abu Na'ilah went out to him.

3:18 Abu Na'ilah and I were foster brothers to Ka'b.

3:22 When Ka'b saw him, he was suspicious of his state.

3:27 Abu Na'ilah said to him,

3:29 "We have a need for you."

3:32 Ka'b asked, "And what is it?"

3:35 Abu Na'ilah said,

3:37 "The arrival of this man among us has been a calamity,

3:41 The Arabs have fought us,

3:43 They have united against us like a single bow,

3:45 And the paths have been cut off from us,

3:48 Until lives have been exhausted and our families are lost.

3:51 We have been reduced to seeking charity,

3:53 And we find nothing to eat."

3:55 Ka'b said,

3:57 "By Allah, I told you this would happen before."

4:01 Abu Na'ilah said,

4:03 "I have men with me who share my opinion,

4:07 And I wanted to bring them to you

4:10 So that we might buy food or dates from you,

4:13 And you would show us kindness in that,

4:16 And we will leave you collateral that you can trust."

4:20 Ka'b said,

4:22 "By Allah, I would not have liked, O Abu Na'ilah,

4:25 To see you in such need,

4:28 Even though you are among the dearest of people to me.

4:31 You are my brother, we shared the same breast."

4:34 Abu Na'ilah said,

4:36 "Keep what I told you about Muhammad a secret."

4:40 Ka'b said,

4:42 "I will not mention a word of it."

4:44 Then Ka'b said,

4:46 "O Abu Na'ilah,

4:48 Tell me the truth:

4:50 What is it you want regarding the affair of Muhammad?"

4:53 He said,

4:54 "To abandon him and turn away from him,

4:57 And to overcome him if we can."

5:00 He said,

5:01 "You have pleased me, O Abu Na'ilah.

5:04 So what will you give me as collateral for the food?

5:07 Your sons and your women?"

5:10 Abu Na'ilah said,

5:12 "You want to disgrace us and expose our affair?

5:16 No,

5:17 But we will leave you as collateral whatever weapons you are satisfied with."

5:21 Ka'b agreed.

5:24 We intended by the weapons collateral

5:26 That he would not suspect our intentions when we returned to him carrying weapons.

5:31 Abu Na'ilah left him,

5:34 And we had agreed to come to him all together in the evening.

5:39 We came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:42 And informed him of our plan.

5:44 He said to us,

5:46 "Proceed with the blessing of Allah."

5:49 Then we prayed the 'Isha prayer with him,

5:52 And he walked with us as far as the Baqi'.

5:55 We came to Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf as promised.

5:58 Abu Na'ilah called out to him.

6:00 Ka'b was a newlywed.

6:04 His bride said,

6:06 "Where are you going?

6:07 It is as if I hear a voice dripping with blood."

6:11 He said,

6:12 "It is only my brother, Abu Na'ilah,

6:15 And I have an appointment with him."

6:18 Then he came down and met us.

6:20 We spoke for a little while,

6:22 Then we walked along,

6:24 Until an opportunity presented itself.

6:27 We struck him with our swords.

6:29 Then I finished him off with a dagger I had with me.

6:33 I placed it in his belly,

6:35 And pressed down until it reached his flank.

6:39 The enemy of Allah fell dead.

6:43 He had let out a cry that terrified the Jews,

6:47 So they lit fires in their fortresses.

6:50 We hurried away from among them,

6:53 Until we reached the Baqi'.

6:55 We shouted "Allahu Akbar."

6:57 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, heard our takbir,

7:02 And knew that we had killed him.

7:05 When we reached him,

7:07 He said, "May these faces be successful."

7:10 We said,

7:11 "And yours, O Messenger of Allah."
