0:16 I am one of the Companions, a leader of the Ansar, and one of their chieftains on the day of the Pledge of 'Aqabah.

0:27 I was skilled in writing during the pre-Islamic era.

0:30 I was also proficient in swimming and archery.

0:33 For this reason, they used to call me "the Perfect One."

0:38 I am the only one among the Ansar

0:40 who suffered the same persecution that the Emigrants (Muhajirun) endured in Makkah.

0:45 This is because the Quraysh sent their horsemen to pursue the delegation from Madinah after the Hajj season,

0:52 during which we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:57 They did not catch anyone but me.

1:00 They seized me and tied my hands to my neck.

1:03 They took me back to Makkah,

1:06 where they gathered around me, striking me,

1:09 and inflicting upon me whatever torment they wished.

1:13 Then, a man among them took me aside, as if he felt pity for me.

1:17 He said, "Woe to you! Do you have no one in Makkah to grant you protection?"

1:23 I replied, "No."

1:25 "Except that al-'As ibn Wa'il used to visit us in Madinah, and we would honor him."

1:31 The man from the group said, "Mention my cousin, for I am his neighbor."

1:36 "By Allah, no one among you shall reach him."

1:40 So they desisted from me.

1:43 In Madinah, I dedicated all my wealth to the service of Islam and the honoring of the Muslims.

1:51 For a man from the Ansar would take one of the Emigrants to his home,

1:57 or two, or three.

2:00 But I would take all the People of the Suffah to my house and honor them.

2:05 They were between seventy and eighty men.

2:09 I would prepare tharid with meat in a large bowl,

2:13 and send it to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:17 My bowl would circulate with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, among the houses of all his wives.

2:25 Because of this,

2:27 I always asked my Lord for more of His bounty and provision.

2:32 I would say,

2:33 "O Allah, grant me glory,

2:36 and there is no glory without deeds,

2:39 and there are no deeds without wealth.

2:42 O Allah, a little wealth does not suit me,

2:46 nor do I suit it."

2:49 I was also extremely protective and jealous (ghayrah).

2:51 People knew this about me.

2:54 I never married a woman

2:56 except that she was a virgin.

2:58 And I never divorced a woman

3:00 such that anyone would dare to marry her after me.

3:04 I also placed my horsemanship and military expertise in the service of Islam.

3:12 The banner of the Emigrants in battles was with 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him,

3:18 and the banner of the Ansar was with me.

3:21 During the Battle of Badr,

3:23 when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, learned that the caravan of Abu Sufyan had escaped,

3:29 he said,

3:30 "Advise me, O people."

3:33 Al-Miqdad and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them, spoke.

3:38 Yet the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, continued to say,

3:42 "Advise me, O people."

3:45 So I stood up and said,

3:47 "By Allah, it is us you want, O Messenger of Allah!

3:51 Proceed, O Messenger of Allah, to whatever you desire,

3:54 for we are with you.

3:56 By Allah, if you ordered us to drive our horses into the sea, we would drive them into it.

4:01 And if you ordered us to strike their flanks until we reached Bark al-Ghimad, we would do it."

4:07 The face of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, beamed with joy.

4:12 When the fighting intensified,

4:14 I stood at the door of the command tent, guarding the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:20 for fear that the polytheists might reach him.
