2:20 "For by Him in whose hand is my soul,"

2:22 "His words are more severe against them than the impact of arrows."

2:27 The Prophet, peace be upon him, chose me

2:30 To be the third commander of the Muslims in the army of Mu'tah.

2:34 That army whose number did not exceed three thousand fighters.

2:41 We set out to meet the Romans.

2:44 When we approached the land of the non-Arabs,

2:47 News reached us that the enemy

2:50 Had prepared for us an army numbering two hundred thousand fighters,

2:54 From the Romans and the Ghassanids.

2:57 The Islamic army halted,

2:59 And they began to consult among themselves.

3:02 I encouraged the Muslims and said to them,

3:05 "O people, by Allah, that which you dislike,"

3:09 "Is the very thing for which you set out,"

3:11 "Which is martyrdom."

3:13 The army was invigorated and advanced to fight.

3:16 When the two armies met,

3:19 And the battle began,

3:21 It was only a matter of moments

3:23 Before the first commander was killed,

3:25 Zayd ibn Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him.

3:28 Then the second commander, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, was killed.

3:34 The banner was then passed to me.

3:36 My soul hesitated for a moment,

3:39 So I addressed it, reciting:

3:42 "I have sworn, O soul, that you shall descend,"

3:45 "Willingly or unwillingly."

3:48 "For you have long been at ease,"

3:51 "Why do I see you loathing Paradise?"

3:55 "Are you but a drop in a water skin?"

3:58 "The people have gathered and raised a clamor."

4:02 And I also said:

4:04 "O soul, if you are not killed, you will die anyway."

4:07 "This is the pool of death that you have encountered."

4:10 "Whatever you wished for, you have been granted."

4:13 "If you do as they did, you will be guided."

4:16 "And if you delay, you will be miserable."

4:19 Then I fought the people, advancing and not retreating,

4:23 Until I was killed.

4:25 The Prophet, peace be upon him, announced

4:28 To his Companions while he was in Medina

4:31 The news of my death and that of my companions,

4:34 While his eyes were shedding tears.
