I was one of the oppressed whom they used to torture,

and whom the disbelievers of Quraysh in Makkah used to brutalize

because of their Islam.

I was a Roman slave girl belonging to the Banu Makhzum.

Abu Jahl used to inflict the most severe torture upon me,

to the point where I could barely comprehend anything.

One day, the disbelievers of Quraysh took me,

and they tortured me with the most severe torment.

They refused to let me go until I abandoned the religion of Muhammad,

peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

Yet I did not yield to them.

They struck me on my head until I went blind.

The polytheists said,

"Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza have blinded her for her disbelief in them."

I said to them,

"What do Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza know of those who worship them?

They are but idols that can neither benefit nor harm.

This is only by the command of Allah,

and my Lord is capable of restoring my sight if He wills."

When the next morning came,

Allah had restored my sight.

Quraysh were astonished and said,

"This is from the magic of Muhammad."

Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me one day,

and he saw the torture I was suffering at the hands of the polytheists.

So he bought me from them and set me free.
