0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:22 I embraced Islam in the seventh year of the Hijrah.

0:26 I was a man of great wealth during the Age of Ignorance.

0:29 I owned the mines of Banu Sulaym.

0:32 I was the first to send my zakat to the Prophet, peace be upon him, from those mines.

0:36 I did so willingly and with a clear conscience.

0:41 I also gifted the Prophet, peace be upon him,

0:44 my sword, known as Dhu al-Fiqar.

0:47 I witnessed the conquest of Khaybar with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

0:53 After the battle, I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

0:57 I have wealth scattered in Makkah with various merchants,

1:01 and other wealth with my wife.

1:04 I fear that if they learn of my Islam,

1:07 they will seize my wealth."

1:09 "So, permit me to go to them, perhaps I can recover it from them."

1:14 He granted me permission.

1:16 Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

1:19 I must say something to them that will satisfy them so they will help me collect it."

1:25 He, peace be upon him, replied,

1:28 "Say whatever you wish; you are permitted to do so."

1:31 So I set out, heading toward Makkah.

1:34 When I reached a place near the city,

1:37 I encountered a group from Quraysh who were scouting for news.

1:42 When they saw me, they said,

1:44 "This man has the news."

1:47 I said to them,

1:49 "Muhammad has suffered the most terrible defeat you have ever heard of."

1:52 "His Companions have been killed,"

1:54 "and Muhammad has been taken prisoner."

1:57 "The Jews said,"

1:59 "'We will not kill him until we send him to the people of Makkah,'"

2:03 "'so that he may be executed among them in retaliation for the men of theirs who were killed.'"

2:08 Then we went to Makkah together.

2:11 They shouted in Makkah, saying,

2:14 "This man has come to you with the news!"

2:17 "Muhammad has been taken prisoner,"

2:19 "and you are only waiting for him to be brought to you,"

2:22 "so that he may be executed in your midst."

2:25 Then I said to them,

2:27 "Help me collect my wealth,"

2:29 "for I intend to return to Khaybar,"

2:32 "to buy what I can from the spoils taken from Muhammad,"

2:35 "before the merchants get there."

2:38 They gathered my wealth for me as quickly as possible.

2:42 I said to my wife,

2:44 "Give me my wealth,"

2:46 "perhaps I can catch up and profit from the sales."

2:49 So she handed over my wealth.

2:53 When the news of this reached Makkah,

2:56 the Muslims were devastated.

2:59 Al-'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, became broken and distressed,

3:03 unable to even stand.

3:06 He sent his servant to me to inquire about the truth of the news.

3:10 I said to the servant,

3:12 "Give my greetings to Abu al-Fadl,"

3:15 "and tell him,"

3:16 "'Find a private place in one of your homes so I may come to you.'"

3:21 The servant went to him,

3:24 and informed him of what I had said.

3:26 Al-'Abbas rushed to me, overjoyed,

3:29 to the point that he kissed me between the eyes and freed his servant.

3:32 I met with Al-'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him,

3:35 and I said to him,

3:37 "Rejoice in what will please you."

3:39 "By Allah, I left your nephew,"

3:41 "and Allah has granted him victory at Khaybar,"

3:44 "and those of its people who were to be killed have been killed,"

3:47 "and its wealth has become his,"

3:49 "and his Companions'."

3:50 "I left him as a bridegroom to the daughter of their king."

3:54 "I have embraced Islam,"

3:56 "and I only came to retrieve my wealth,"

3:59 "then I will return to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

4:03 "Keep this news secret for three days,"

4:07 "for I fear they might pursue me."

4:09 "After that, say whatever you like."

4:12 Then I bade him farewell and left Makkah.

4:17 When the third day arrived,

4:21 Al-'Abbas put on an expensive garment,

4:24 perfumed himself,

4:25 took his staff,

4:27 and went out to the Mosque.

4:29 He touched the Black Stone.

4:31 Some men from Quraysh looked at him,

4:34 and said,

4:35 "O Abu al-Fadl,"

4:37 "by Allah, this is true fortitude in the face of a bitter tragedy!"

4:41 He replied,

4:43 "No, by Allah,"

4:44 "but Muhammad has conquered Khaybar,"

4:47 "and it has become his and his Companions',"

4:50 "and he has become a bridegroom to the daughter of their king."

4:53 They said,

4:54 "Who told you this news?"

4:57 He said,

4:58 "The one who told you that he had been defeated and taken prisoner."

5:02 "The man has embraced Islam,"

5:05 "and has followed Muhammad in his religion,"

5:07 "and he only came to take his wealth,"

5:10 "then he will return to him."

5:12 They said,

5:14 "The enemy of Allah has deceived us!"

5:16 "By Allah, had we known,"

5:18 "we would have dealt with him differently."

5:21 It was not long before the certain news reached them,

5:25 of the conquest of Khaybar and the victory of the Muslims.
