0:22 I embraced Islam when Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived in Medina.

0:28 I was frequently in the company of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Medina.

0:33 Ever since his migration there.

0:36 As for my father, he was known during the Age of Ignorance as "the Monk."

0:41 He used to speak of the Resurrection and the religion of the Hanifiyyah.

0:45 But when the Prophet, peace be upon him, was sent,

0:49 envy overcame him, and he did not respond to his call.

0:54 Instead, he showed him hostility and left Medina.

0:58 He even fought against the Muslims at the Battle of Uhud alongside the Quraysh.

1:02 So the Prophet, peace be upon him, renamed him "the Corrupt" instead of "the Monk."

1:08 In the third year after the Hijrah, I married a noble female Companion.

1:15 Her name was Jamilah bint 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, may Allah be pleased with her.

1:21 I consummated the marriage with her on the night preceding the Battle of Uhud.

1:27 I had asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, for permission to spend the night with her,

1:32 and he granted it to me.

1:34 When I prayed the dawn prayer,

1:36 I set out, intending to join the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

1:41 But my wife, Jamilah, held me back,

1:44 so I returned and stayed with her.

1:46 I had marital relations with her.

1:48 When I heard the caller for Jihad,

1:51 I wanted to leave,

1:53 but she sent for four of her people

1:56 to bear witness that I had consummated the marriage with her.

2:00 Then I left and joined the ranks of the Muslim army.

2:04 When the fighting began

2:06 and the two sides clashed,

2:08 I encountered Abu Sufyan ibn Harb during the battle.

2:12 We exchanged blows with our swords,

2:14 and I struck him a blow that brought him down.

2:18 As I stood over him with my sword to kill him,

2:21 Shaddad ibn al-Aswad saw me,

2:24 threw his spear at my back, and killed me.

2:28 After the battle ended,

2:31 the Prophet, peace be upon him, saw me

2:34 while the angels were washing me between the heavens and the earth

2:38 with rainwater in silver basins.

2:42 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

2:45 "Ask his wife about that."

2:48 So they asked her,

2:50 and she said, "When he heard the caller for Jihad,

2:54 he left me while he was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah)."

2:57 She was then asked

2:59 why she had called witnesses to our intimacy.

3:01 She replied,

3:03 "I saw as if the sky had opened up,

3:06 my husband entered it, and then it closed."

3:10 "I said, 'This is martyrdom,'

3:13 so I bore witness that he had consummated the marriage with me

3:16 so that I would not be accused."

3:19 They mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

3:23 and he said,

3:25 "That is he whom the angels have washed."

3:29 They later found me among the slain, with my head dripping with water,

3:33 even though there was no water nearby.

3:36 Thus, I became known as "the one washed by the angels."

3:39 The tribes of the Ansar boasted,

3:43 the Aws and the Khazraj.

3:45 The Aws said,

3:47 "Among us is the one washed by the angels,"

3:49 referring to me.

3:51 "And among us is he for whom the Throne of the Most Merciful shook,"

3:55 Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.

3:57 "And among us is he whom the bees protected,"

3:59 'Asim ibn Thabit.

4:01 "And among us is he whose testimony was accepted

4:04 as equal to the testimony of two men,"

4:06 Khuzaymah ibn Thabit.

4:08 The Khazrajis said,

4:10 "Among us are four who memorized the Qur'an

4:13 during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

4:17 and no one else collected it as they did:

4:19 Zayd ibn Thabit,

4:21 Abu Zayd,

4:23 Ubayy ibn Ka'b,

4:25 and Mu'adh ibn Jabal,"

4:27 may Allah be pleased with them all.
