1:01 And one of the authors of the Mu'allaqat.

1:03 My grandfather was Rabi'ah.

1:05 We are known by the kunya Abu Sulma, the poet.

1:08 My paternal aunt, Sulma, was a poetess.

1:10 My brother, Bujayr, was a poet.

1:13 My son, 'Uqbah, was a poet.

1:15 And my grandson, al-'Awwam ibn 'Uqbah, was also a poet.

1:19 That is why 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, considered me

1:22 The greatest poet of the Jahiliyyah.

1:25 I was also known for my intense hatred of Islam,

1:29 For satirizing the Muslims, and for insulting their women.

1:35 When my brother Bujayr embraced Islam,

1:38 I wrote a poem satirizing the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:43 And the Muslims with him,

1:45 And I insulted their women in it.

1:48 When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, heard it,

1:52 He declared my blood forfeit,

1:54 And said to his Companions,

1:56 "Whoever encounters him, let him kill him."

1:58 My brother Bujayr wrote to me about this,

2:01 Saying, "Seek salvation!

2:04 Save yourself, for I do not see you escaping."

2:08 Then he said,

2:10 "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

2:13 Does not have anyone come to him testifying that there is no god but Allah,

2:17 And that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,

2:20 Except that he accepts it from him,

2:22 And forgives what came before it.

2:24 So when this letter of mine reaches you,

2:27 Come and embrace Islam."

2:29 I wandered aimlessly,

2:32 Not knowing which way to turn.

2:34 Every tribe I approached to seek refuge refused me,

2:38 And the earth, for all its vastness, became constricted for me.

2:41 I remained an outcast and a fugitive,

2:44 Until Allah opened my heart to Islam.

2:48 I headed toward Medina,

2:50 And tethered my mount at the door of the mosque.

2:53 Then I entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was

2:57 Among his Companions.

2:59 I recognized him by his description,

3:01 So I pushed through the people until I sat before him.

3:05 Then I said,

3:07 "O Messenger of Allah,

3:09 If I bring you the poet who used to satirize you, repentant,

3:13 Will you accept it from him and pardon him?"

3:16 He, peace be upon him, said,

3:19 "Yes."

3:20 I said,

3:21 "I am that poet,

3:23 And I seek your protection, O Messenger of Allah."

3:26 Then I recited to him a poem in which I said:

3:30 "Su'ad has departed, and today my heart is lovesick,

3:34 Enslaved by her, shackled, and unable to ransom itself."

3:38 "I was informed that the Messenger of Allah threatened me,

3:42 But pardon is hoped for from the Messenger of Allah."

3:46 "Wait, may He who gave you the gift of the Qur'an, with its promises and details, guide you.

3:55 Do not hold me accountable for the words of slanderers, for I have committed no sin, even if the rumors about me are many."

4:03 "Indeed, the Messenger is a light from which illumination is sought,

4:07 A drawn sword from the swords of Allah."

4:11 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, signaled to those with him

4:16 To listen.

4:18 I recited the entire poem to him,

4:21 And he pardoned me.

4:23 Then he stood up and clothed me in the mantle he was wearing.

4:27 I was overjoyed by it.

4:29 Mu'awiyah, may Allah be pleased with him, wanted to buy it from me for twenty thousand dirhams,

4:35 But I did not sell it.

4:37 It is, to me, priceless.

4:40 It remained with me until my death.

4:43 Then my family sold it for forty thousand dirhams.

4:47 The Umayyad caliphs inherited it,

4:50 Then the Abbasids,

4:52 Until it passed to the caliphs of the Ottoman Empire.
