0:16 I am one of the Companions and among the leaders of the Ansar.

0:22 I was a leader of the Aws tribe in Yathrib before Islam.

0:26 I was among those of sound judgment and influence among them.

0:28 I was one of the great nobles of the Arabs during the Age of Ignorance.

0:33 And one of their fierce warriors.

0:36 I possessed a clear mind and a strong personality.

0:40 And I was a man of keen insight.

0:43 I was one of the twelve leaders at the night of al-Aqaba.

0:47 I regretted missing the Battle of Badr.

0:50 When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, returned from the battle,

0:55 I said to him,

0:56 "O Messenger of Allah,

0:58 Praise be to Allah who granted you victory,

1:00 And brought joy to your eyes.

1:02 By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

1:04 My absence from Badr was not because

1:06 I thought you were meeting an enemy;

1:09 Rather, I thought it was only the caravan.

1:12 Had I known it was an enemy, I would not have stayed behind."

1:16 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me,

1:20 "You have spoken the truth."

1:22 I then witnessed all the battles with him.

1:25 I sustained seven wounds on the day of Uhud.

1:29 When Mus'ab ibn Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, came to Medina,

1:35 Sa'd ibn Mu'adh said to me,

1:37 "Go to this young man from Mecca,

1:40 And forbid him from approaching our gatherings."

1:43 I took my spear and went to him.

1:46 I said to him,

1:48 "If you value your own life,

1:50 Then stay away from us."

1:52 Mus'ab said to me,

1:54 "Will you not sit and listen?

1:56 If it is good, you may accept it;

1:59 And if it is otherwise,

2:01 I shall refrain from what you dislike."

2:03 I said to him, "You have been fair."

2:05 I planted my spear and sat down.

2:08 He recited some of the Qur'an to me,

2:11 And no sooner had his words touched my ears

2:14 Than my heart expanded,

2:16 My facial expression changed,

2:19 And I entered into Islam.

2:21 Ever since my conversion,

2:24 My heart has been attached to the love of the Qur'an.

2:27 I used to recite it with a beautiful voice.

2:30 The Prophet, peace be upon him, heard

2:33 My recitation one day,

2:35 And said,

2:37 "You have been given a flute

2:39 From the flutes of the family of David."

2:42 One night, I was reciting Surah al-Baqarah,

2:45 While my horse was tied in the courtyard of the house,

2:48 And my son was sleeping nearby.

2:51 The horse became agitated,

2:53 So I stopped,

2:54 And the horse calmed down.

2:56 I resumed the recitation,

2:58 And it became agitated a second time.

3:00 I stopped,

3:01 And it calmed down.

3:03 I feared for my son that the horse might trample him,

3:06 So I ceased the recitation.

3:08 Then I looked up at the sky,

3:11 And saw something like a cloud

3:13 With lamps in its center,

3:15 Rising into the sky

3:17 Until it disappeared from my sight.

3:19 When morning came,

3:21 I informed the Prophet, peace be upon him,

3:25 And he said,

3:27 "Those were the angels

3:28 Who descended to listen to your recitation.

3:31 Had you continued,

3:32 People would have seen them in the morning,

3:35 And they would not have been hidden from them."

3:38 I used to strive to serve the needy among the Muslims.

3:43 I once came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

3:47 And mentioned to him the need of a family consisting mostly of women.

3:52 He said to me,

3:54 "When food comes to us,

3:56 Remind me of them."

3:58 When food was brought to him,

4:00 I reminded him,

4:02 And he gave them a generous portion.

4:04 I said to him,

4:06 "May Allah reward you, O Prophet of Allah,

4:08 With the best of rewards."

4:10 He replied,

4:12 "And you, O people of the Ansar,

4:14 May Allah reward you with the best of rewards.

4:17 For you are, as you have known,

4:19 Chaste and patient.

4:21 You will see selfishness after me,

4:23 So be patient until you meet me at the Basin."
