When the people saw me, they rejoiced at my arrival,

knowing full well my boldness and readiness to aid.

I said, "O Muhammad, I have come to follow you and take part in the spoils with you."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me,

"Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?"

I said, "No."

He said, "Then turn back, for we will never seek the aid of a polytheist."

Then I caught up with him at al-Shajarah,

and I repeated the same words to him,

Then I caught up with him at al-Bayda',

and he asked, "Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?"

He said, "Then march forth with us."

Thus, I took part in the Battle of Badr alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

During the battle,

I encountered a man among the polytheists

of formidable might.

He struck me on my shoulder,

and I struck him back and killed him.

My side drooped from the severity of his blow,

so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

He spat lightly upon it,

rejoined it, and set it back in place,

so my shoulder was restored as it had been,

though the trace of the scar remained upon it.

Later on, I married that man's daughter after she embraced Islam.

She used to say to me playfully,

"May you never lose the man who adorned you with this sash!"

She meant the scar upon my shoulder left by her father's strike.

And I would reply to her,

"May you never lose the man who hastened your father to the Fire!"
