0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:23 I am from the Muzaynah tribe.

0:25 My kunya (patronymic) is Abu 'Ali.

0:27 No other Companion is known by this kunya except for me.

0:32 I was known for my strength and courage in battle.

0:35 And for my endurance and patience during trials.

0:38 I was also known for my administrative skill and ability to lead people.

0:42 This qualified me to be the governor of Basra during the caliphate of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him.

0:48 I embraced Islam before the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.

0:50 I witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan.

0:53 When we pledged allegiance to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, under the tree, promising not to flee.

1:00 That tree was an acacia tree.

1:03 I used to lift its branches away from the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

1:08 While he was taking the pledge from the people beneath it.

1:11 So Allah the Almighty revealed regarding us His words:

1:15 “Allah was well pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance unto thee beneath the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down peace of reassurance on them, and hath rewarded them with a near victory;” (48:18)

1:22 “Allah was well pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance unto thee beneath the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down peace of reassurance on them, and hath rewarded them with a near victory;” (48:18)

1:25 "He sent down tranquility upon them,"

1:28 "And rewarded them with an imminent conquest,"

1:32 "And much spoils which they will acquire."

1:37 "And Allah is Exalted in Might, All-Wise."

1:41 I was one who would stop at the limits set by Allah.

1:46 I was quick to obey His commands.

1:49 An example of this is:

1:51 I had a sister who received many marriage proposals, but I would refuse them all.

1:55 Eventually, a cousin of mine proposed to her.

1:58 I gave her to him in marriage.

2:00 They remained together for as long as Allah willed.

2:03 Then, he divorced her with a revocable divorce.

2:07 He left her until her waiting period ('iddah) had expired.

2:11 Then he came to propose to her again.

2:13 She wanted to return to him.

2:16 I said to him:

2:17 "You proposed to her,"

2:19 "And I refused everyone else for you,"

2:21 "And I favored you with her hand,"

2:23 "Then you divorced her."

2:25 "By Allah, I will never let you marry her again."

2:29 So Allah the Almighty revealed His words:

2:32 "And when you have divorced women,"

2:37 "And they have fulfilled their term,"

2:40 "Do not prevent them"

2:43 "From remarrying their [former] husbands"

2:48 "If they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis."

2:56 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, summoned me.

2:59 And recited this verse to me.

3:02 I abandoned my pride.

3:04 And I submitted to the command of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.

3:07 I said, "I will do it now, O Messenger of Allah."

3:11 I offered expiation for my oath.

3:13 And I gave her to him in marriage.

3:16 I settled in Basra.

3:19 I built a house there.

3:21 And I dug a canal there.

3:23 By the order of 'Umar, the Commander of the Faithful,

3:26 May Allah be pleased with him.

3:28 That canal became known by my name.

3:31 Before my death,

3:33 Ibn Ziyad came to visit me.

3:35 He was one of the oppressive rulers.

3:38 I said to him:

3:40 "I will tell you a hadith"

3:42 "That I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."

3:47 I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say:

3:51 "Whoever is entrusted with the care of subjects,"

3:53 "And does not look after them with sincere counsel,"

3:55 "Will not smell the fragrance of Paradise."

3:58 "And its fragrance can be perceived from a distance of a hundred years."

4:02 So, who am I?
