0:16 I am one of the prominent Companions,

0:22 and one of the paternal uncles of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who migrated.

0:27 I was a nobleman among the chieftains of Makkah,

0:30 where I grew up alongside my nephew

0:33 and foster brother, Muhammad, peace be upon him.

0:38 I was known for courage and generosity,

0:41 and I was one of Quraysh's fiercest youths,

0:44 possessing the most unyielding pride and resolve.

0:46 I loved hunting and spent much of my time pursuing it.

0:50 Once, I returned carrying my bow across my shoulder,

0:55 coming back from a hunt,

0:57 and I passed by a female servant of 'Abdullah ibn Jud'an.

1:01 She said to me, "O Abu 'Umarah,

1:04 if only you had seen what your nephew suffered at the hands of Abu Jahl!

1:08 He found him right here, hurt him, and insulted him,

1:11 treating him with utter contempt,

1:14 then walked away while Muhammad did not utter a single word to him."

1:18 When I heard that,

1:20 fierce protective zeal for my nephew seized me,

1:23 and fury took hold of me.

1:25 I departed immediately, without stopping to converse with anyone as I usually did.

1:30 When I entered the assembly hall of the Dar al-Nadwah,

1:33 I saw Abu Jahl sitting among the people.

1:36 I marched straight toward him,

1:38 and as soon as I stood over his head,

1:41 I raised my bow and struck him with it,

1:44 inflicting a severe and ghastly gash on his head.

1:47 Then I said to him,

1:49 "Do you dare revile him while I follow his religion,

1:51 proclaiming what he proclaims?

1:53 Retaliate against me if you can!"

1:56 Men from Banu Makhzum rose up against me,

1:59 but Abu Jahl said,

2:01 "Leave Abu 'Umarah alone,

2:03 for by Allah, I insulted his nephew most vilely."

2:08 I left their presence,

2:10 while Allah had cast the love of Islam into my heart,

2:14 and thus I embraced Islam at that moment.

2:16 Through my conversion, the strength of the Muslims was greatly bolstered.

2:20 I migrated to Madinah,

2:24 and took part in the Battle of Badr alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him.

2:28 I killed the very first polytheist fallen in that battle,

2:33 when al-Aswad ibn 'Abd al-Asad al-Makhzumi came forward

2:38 having vowed to Allah that he would drink from our cistern, demolish it,

2:43 or die trying.

2:45 So I went out to face him,

2:47 and when we clashed,

2:49 I dealt him a blow with my sword.

2:51 He then crawled toward the cistern,

2:53 desperate to fulfill his oath,

2:56 so I struck him again and killed him before he could reach it.

3:01 Then three of their champions emerged demanding a duel,

3:06 so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered me,

3:12 along with 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith and 'Ali ibn Abi Talib,

3:17 to go out to meet them.

3:19 We fought them in single combat and killed them all,

3:23 and that was the very first duel in Islam.

3:26 Regarding us, Allah Almighty revealed:

3:29 "These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord..."

3:33 down to the end of the verses.

3:35 Then the general battle commenced,

3:37 and I placed an ostrich feather upon my chest,

3:40 fighting vigorously, slaying and striking down the enemy.

3:43 I wore an ostrich feather upon my chest

3:46 and engaged the polytheists in combat,

3:48 felling their mightiest champions

3:50 and dislodging them from their positions,

3:53 until Allah routed them.

3:55 After the battle, Umayyah ibn Khalaf asked

3:58 while he was a captive:

4:00 "Who was the man marked with the ostrich feather on his chest,

4:04 the one who wreaked such havoc upon us?"

4:07 The Muslims gave me the title "The Lion of Allah"

4:10 and "The Lion of His Messenger," peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
