0:16 I am one of the Companions, from the tribe of Ghifar.

0:24 I was a monotheist even in the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era of ignorance), and I never worshipped idols.

0:29 I was well known for my courage and bravery.

0:32 I forbade myself alcohol, intoxication, and divining arrows.

0:36 I was a man of sound intellect and deep reflection.

0:40 Word reached me that a man had appeared in Mecca claiming to be a prophet.

0:46 So I said to my brother Unays, "Go to this man and bring me news of him."

0:52 He went and met him, then returned.

0:56 I asked him, "What news do you have?"

0:59 He said, "By Allah, I saw a man commanding good and forbidding evil."

1:06 I said to him, "You have not satisfied my curiosity with this report."

1:10 So I took a traveling bag and a staff, and set out for Mecca.

1:15 I did not know the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

1:19 and I disliked asking anyone about him.

1:22 Then 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me.

1:25 He said, "It seems the man is a stranger."

1:28 I said, "Yes."

1:30 He said, "Then come along to my home."

1:33 So I went with him, neither of us asking the other anything.

1:38 When morning came, I went to the Mosque to ask about him,

1:43 but no one would tell me anything about him.

1:47 In the evening, 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me again and said,

1:51 "Has the time not come for the man to know his dwelling yet?"

1:55 I said, "No."

1:57 He said, "Then come with me."

1:59 He then asked, "What is your matter, and what brought you to this town?"

2:05 I told him, "If you keep my secret, I will tell you."

2:11 He said, "I will do so."

2:14 I said to him, "Word reached me that a man has appeared here claiming to be a prophet,

2:21 and I wished to meet him."

2:23 He said to me, "Indeed, you have been rightly guided.

2:27 This is my way to him, so follow me."

2:31 So I went with him until we entered upon the Prophet, peace be upon him.

2:37 I said to him, "Present Islam to me."

2:41 He presented it to me, and I embraced Islam on the spot.

2:45 He said to me, "Keep this matter secret and return to your land;

2:50 perhaps Allah will benefit them through you.

2:53 And when news reaches you of our victory, then come to us."

2:57 So I set out, returning to my people,

3:00 until I came to my brother.

3:02 He said to me, "What have you done?"

3:05 I said, "I have embraced Islam and believed."

3:09 He said, "I have no aversion to your religion;

3:13 I, too, have embraced Islam with you and believed."

3:17 Then we went to our mother and informed her of our news.

3:21 She said, "I have no aversion to the religion of you two;

3:25 I, too, have embraced Islam and believed alongside you."

3:29 Then I called my tribe, Ghifar, to Islam.

3:32 Some of them accepted Islam, while the rest said,

3:36 "When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prevails,

3:40 we will embrace Islam."

3:43 So when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, arrived

3:46 in Medina,

3:48 I set out, migrating to him.

3:50 The remainder of my tribe then embraced Islam,

3:53 and I brought them all to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

3:57 Then the tribe of Aslam came as well,

4:00 and they said, "O Messenger of Allah,

4:02 our brothers—

4:04 we accept Islam upon that which they have accepted."

4:07 Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

4:11 "Ghifar—

4:12 may Allah forgive them;

4:14 and Aslam—

4:15 may Allah grant them peace."
