0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

0:22 I am among the early migrants (Muhajirun) to Islam.

0:26 I migrated to Abyssinia and then to Medina.

0:30 I was known for my courage in battle and my patience in times of hardship.

0:35 I was the envoy of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to Chosroes, the King of Persia.

0:41 I carried a letter from him inviting the king to Islam.

0:45 I entered the presence of Chosroes in his palace.

0:48 I delivered the letter of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, to him.

0:53 When he read it, he became angry and tore the letter to pieces.

0:57 The Prophet, peace be upon him, then said:

1:01 "May Allah tear his kingdom apart."

1:03 The Prophet, peace be upon him, once sent out a military detachment.

1:09 He appointed me as their commander.

1:11 We stopped somewhere along the way.

1:13 We lit a fire to keep warm.

1:16 And we prepared our food over it.

1:19 I was a man who loved to joke.

1:22 So I said to my companions:

1:24 "Do I not have the right to your hearing and obedience?"

1:27 They replied, "Yes, indeed."

1:29 I said, "Then I command you..."

1:32 "...to jump into this fire."

1:35 Some people stood up and prepared to do so.

1:38 When I saw that they were about to jump in,

1:41 I said to them, "Stop!"

1:44 "I was only joking with you."

1:47 When they arrived back to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:51 they mentioned this to him.

1:54 He said, "Whoever commands you to commit a sin,"

1:57 "do not obey him."

1:59 "Obedience is only in what is righteous."

2:03 I went out with an army

2:05 sent by the Commander of the Faithful, Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,

2:09 to fight the Romans.

2:11 The Romans captured me and took me to their king.

2:15 They said, "This man is one of the companions of Muhammad."

2:19 Their king, Caesar, said to me:

2:22 "Will you convert to Christianity?"

2:24 "And I will give you half of my kingdom."

2:27 I replied, "If you were to give me everything you possess and all the kingdoms of the Arabs,"

2:31 "I would not turn back from my religion for even the blink of an eye."

2:35 He said, "Then I will kill you."

2:38 I said, "That is up to you."

2:41 He ordered that I be crucified.

2:44 He told the Romans, "Shoot arrows near his body,"

2:48 while he kept offering me to abandon my religion.

2:51 But I refused.

2:53 Then they took me down.

2:55 They placed me in a house without food,

2:58 except for wine and pork.

3:01 I remained for three days without eating or drinking,

3:06 until my neck began to bend from weakness.

3:08 Then they brought me out.

3:10 Caesar said to me:

3:12 "What kept you from eating and drinking?"

3:14 I said:

3:16 "I know that it is permissible for me to eat these forbidden things in a state of necessity,"

3:22 "but I hated to let you gloat over Islam."

3:26 At that, Caesar called for a large cauldron.

3:29 He poured oil into it until it was boiling.

3:33 He called for a man from the prison.

3:36 He gave the order,

3:37 and he was thrown into the boiling oil.

3:39 He died, and his bones were laid bare.

3:42 He kept offering me Christianity,

3:45 and I kept refusing.

3:47 Caesar said to them:

3:49 "Throw him into the cauldron."

3:51 I began to weep.

3:53 It was said to the king, "He is weeping."

3:56 He thought I had become fearful.

3:59 He said:

4:00 "Bring him back to me."

4:02 He asked me:

4:03 "What made you weep?"

4:05 I said:

4:06 "It is only one soul."

4:08 "It is being thrown into this cauldron now and will be gone."

4:12 "I only wished that I had as many souls as the hairs on my body,"

4:16 "to be thrown into the fire for the sake of Allah."

4:20 Caesar then said to me:

4:22 "Will you kiss my head, and I will set you free?"

4:25 I said to him:

4:27 "And all the Muslim prisoners as well?"

4:30 He said, "Yes."

4:31 So I kissed his head,

4:33 and he released me and all the prisoners.

4:36 I went to Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,

4:39 and told him my story.

4:41 Umar said:

4:43 "It is the duty of every Muslim to kiss your head."

4:47 "And I shall begin."

4:49 So he kissed my head.
