0:16 I am a female Companion from the Banu Makhzum tribe of Makkah.

0:23 I married my cousin, who was a righteous man.

0:28 When we intended to migrate to Madinah,

0:31 my husband prepared a camel for me.

0:34 He helped me mount it,

0:36 and carried my son in my lap.

0:39 Then he set out with me, leading the camel.

0:42 When the men of my tribe, the Banu Makhzum, saw him,

0:47 they confronted him and said,

0:49 "You have managed to overcome us regarding yourself,

0:52 but do you think we will let you take our companion here

0:55 and travel with her through the lands?"

0:59 They snatched the camel’s halter from his hand,

1:02 and took me from him against my will and his.

1:06 So my husband departed for Madinah, migrating alone.

1:11 When the tribe of my husband, the Banu 'Abd al-Asad, learned of this,

1:15 they were enraged and said,

1:17 "By Allah, we will not leave our son with her

1:21 since you have taken her away from our companion."

1:24 They went to them,

1:26 and they pulled my son between them

1:28 until they dislocated his arm.

1:30 The Banu 'Abd al-Asad took him away,

1:33 and the Banu Makhzum kept me detained with them.

1:36 Thus, they separated me from my husband,

1:39 and from my son.

1:42 My heart was nearly breaking with grief,

1:45 and I could no longer bear the patience.

1:48 I would go out every morning,

1:51 and sit at al-Abtah,

1:53 weeping until evening fell.

1:57 I remained in this state for a year, or nearly so,

2:02 until a man from my cousins passed by me.

2:06 He saw my condition and felt pity for me,

2:09 so he said to the Banu Makhzum,

2:11 "Will you not have mercy on this poor woman?

2:14 You have separated her from her husband and her child.

2:19 What is your business with her?"

2:21 They softened toward me and said,

2:24 "Join your husband if you wish."

2:27 Then he spoke to the Banu 'Abd al-Asad as well,

2:30 and they returned my son to me.

2:34 I prepared my camel,

2:36 took my son and placed him in my lap,

2:40 and set out, seeking my husband in Madinah.

2:43 I had no one from Allah’s creation with me,

2:46 nor did I know the way.

2:49 When I reached al-Tan'im,

2:52 I met 'Uthman ibn Talha (may Allah be pleased with him),

2:55 who was a polytheist at that time.

2:58 He asked me, "Where are you going, O servant of Allah?"

3:02 I replied, "I am seeking my husband in Madinah."

3:06 He asked, "Is there no one with you?"

3:09 I said, "No, by Allah,

3:12 except Allah and this son of mine."

3:15 He said, "By Allah, you cannot be left alone."

3:19 He took the camel’s halter,

3:21 and set out with me until he brought me to Madinah.

3:25 He said, "Your husband is in this village,"

3:29 and then he returned to Makkah.

3:32 I entered Madinah,

3:34 and Allah reunited me with my husband.

3:37 During the Battle of Uhud,

3:40 my husband was wounded,

3:42 and I began to nurse him,

3:44 but his time came and he passed away.

3:47 I recited the prayer of patience (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un),

3:49 and said as the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught me:

3:54 "O Allah, reward me in my affliction,

3:57 and replace it for me with something better."

4:00 Then I said to myself,

4:04 "Where could I find a man better than my husband?"

4:08 When my waiting period ('iddah) ended,

4:10 the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) proposed to me.

4:14 I said, "Welcome, O Messenger of Allah,

4:18 and one like you cannot be refused.

4:21 But I am a woman of intense jealousy,

4:24 and I fear that you might see something in me

4:27 for which Allah would punish me.

4:30 Furthermore, I am a woman who has advanced in age,

4:33 and I have children."

4:36 He (peace be upon him) replied,

4:39 "As for what you mentioned regarding jealousy,

4:41 Allah will remove it from you.

4:44 As for what you mentioned regarding age,

4:47 I have been afflicted with the same as you.

4:50 And as for what you mentioned regarding the children,

4:53 your children are my children."

4:56 So he (peace be upon him) married me,

5:00 and Allah replaced my husband with one who was better than him:

5:04 the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

5:08 Thus, I became one of the Mothers of the Believers,

5:11 and one of the wives of the Trustworthy Messenger.
