0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:22 I was one of the rabbis of the Jews and one of the wealthiest among them.

0:27 I lived in Medina.

0:30 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, migrated there,

0:34 I went to observe him.

0:36 There was not a single sign of prophethood

0:39 that I did not recognize in his face, peace be upon him.

0:44 Except for two,

0:46 which I had not yet discerned in him.

0:48 They were:

0:49 that his forbearance would precede his ignorance,

0:52 and that the intensity of ignorance shown toward him would only increase his forbearance.

0:57 So, I began to associate with him to test this in him.

1:02 One day, the Prophet, peace be upon him, left the mosque,

1:08 accompanied by Abu Bakr, Umar, and Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with them.

1:14 I approached them,

1:16 and a Bedouin came asking the Prophet, peace be upon him, for money,

1:22 but he found nothing with him to give.

1:26 So I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:30 and offered him a loan.

1:32 He accepted the loan from me for a specified term.

1:35 When the term was two or three days away from expiring,

1:40 I came to him, peace be upon him,

1:43 and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and his cloak,

1:47 and looked at him with a stern face,

1:50 and said to him,

1:51 "Will you not repay me my due, O Muhammad?

1:55 By Allah, I have never known you, O Banu Hashim,

1:58 to be anything but people who delay the repayment of rights."

2:02 Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, cast his gaze upon me,

2:06 and said, "O enemy of Allah,

2:09 do you say to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, what I hear,

2:14 and do to him what I see?

2:17 By the One who sent him with the truth,

2:19 were it not for my fear of him,

2:21 I would have struck your head with my sword."

2:24 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, looked at Umar calmly and smiled,

2:30 then said,

2:32 "O Umar,

2:33 he and I were in greater need of something other than this:

2:37 for you to advise me to repay well,

2:40 and to advise him to demand his due well.

2:43 Take him, O Umar,

2:46 and give him his due,

2:48 and add twenty sa' of dates to it,

2:51 in compensation for having frightened him."

2:53 So Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, took me,

2:56 gave me my due,

2:58 and added twenty sa' of dates.

3:01 I asked him,

3:03 "Why this increase?"

3:05 He replied,

3:07 "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, ordered it for you

3:11 in compensation for having frightened you."

3:13 I said,

3:15 "O Umar,

3:16 there was not a single sign of prophethood

3:20 that I did not recognize in the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

3:25 when I first looked at him,

3:27 except for two that I had not yet discerned in him:

3:31 that his forbearance precedes his ignorance,

3:34 and that the intensity of ignorance shown toward him only increases his forbearance.

3:38 I have now tested them in him.

3:41 So I call you to witness, O Umar,

3:43 that I am pleased with Allah as my Lord,

3:46 with Islam as my religion,

3:48 and with Muhammad, peace be upon him, as my Prophet.

3:52 I have also made half of my wealth a charity for the Muslims."

3:56 Then I returned with Umar to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

4:02 and I embraced Islam at his hands and pledged allegiance to him,

4:05 and I witnessed the battles alongside him.
