0:16 I am one of the Companions, from the masters of the Quraysh, and my brother was Abu Jahl.

0:30 I witnessed the day of Badr while I was still in a state of disbelief.

0:33 I fled to Makkah when I saw the defeat of the polytheists.

0:38 And the killing of my two brothers, Abu Jahl and al-'As.

0:42 Then I embraced Islam on the day of the conquest of Makkah.

0:45 I witnessed the Battle of Hunayn.

0:48 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave me.

0:51 One hundred camels from the spoils of Hunayn.

0:54 Along with those whose hearts were to be reconciled.

0:57 My Islam became sincere, and I said:

1:00 "I shall not leave any valley I traversed while fighting the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,"

1:06 "But that I will traverse it in the path of Allah."

1:10 "And I shall not leave a single dirham I spent in fighting him,"

1:14 "But that I will spend the like of it in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him."

1:21 I asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, one day and said:

1:27 "O Messenger of Allah, tell me of something I may hold fast to."

1:32 He said, "Control this," and he pointed to his tongue.

1:38 I thought it would be easy, for I was a man of few words.

1:43 But I had not fully grasped its weight.

1:45 When I set out to be mindful of my speech and my tongue,

1:50 I found that there was nothing more difficult than it.

1:54 I was a generous man, a poet, and beloved by the people of Makkah.

1:59 When I resolved to go out for jihad in the path of Allah,

2:03 The people of Makkah were deeply distressed.

2:07 There was not one of them who did not come out to bid me farewell.

2:11 When I reached the high ground of al-Batha',

2:14 I stopped, and the people stood around me weeping.

2:18 When I saw their distress, I said:

2:22 "O people,"

2:24 "By Allah, I have not left out of a desire for myself over you,"

2:29 "Nor to choose one land over your land."

2:32 "But this matter has come to pass."

2:35 "Men have gone forth who preceded us to Allah."

2:39 "And by Allah, we have not attained a single day of their days."

2:43 "By Allah, if they have surpassed us in this world,"

2:47 "We seek to join them in the Hereafter."

2:51 "O people, it is the transition to Allah the Almighty."

2:56 Then I headed to the Levant.

3:01 I was wounded in the Battle of Yarmouk.

3:04 I fell, stretched out upon the ground.

3:07 I asked for water to drink.

3:10 When the water reached me,

3:12 'Ikrimah looked at me,

3:14 And he had also been wounded.

3:17 I said, "Give the water to 'Ikrimah."

3:21 When 'Ikrimah took it,

3:23 'Ayyash looked at him,

3:25 And he said,

3:27 "Give it to 'Ayyash."

3:29 But the water did not reach 'Ayyash,

3:32 Before he had passed away.

3:34 They returned with the water to 'Ikrimah,

3:37 Only to find that he had already passed away.

3:39 Then they brought the water to me,

3:42 But my soul had already departed.

3:45 So, who am I?
