0:16 I am one of the Companions from the tribe of Thaqif.

0:23 I am a poet of fine poetry.

0:25 I am among the famous brave warriors of the Jahiliyyah and Islam.

0:30 I am also generous and open-handed.

0:33 However, I was afflicted with the drinking of wine.

0:37 I would not abandon it for fear of the prescribed punishment or blame.

0:41 I embraced Islam with my people, Thaqif.

0:43 When they came as a delegation to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

0:47 I was lashed for drinking wine repeatedly.

0:50 Yet that did not deter me.

0:52 When we set out for the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah,

0:57 I drank wine.

0:59 So Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, imprisoned me,

1:03 until he could look into my case after the battle.

1:06 He placed shackles on my legs.

1:09 The people rose to fight,

1:12 and I could hear the clashing of swords and the neighing of horses,

1:16 and the cries of the people while I was in my place.

1:20 I heard that the polytheists had inflicted losses upon the Muslims,

1:24 and that the tide was turning in their favor.

1:27 So I sent for Salma, the wife of Sa'd,

1:29 as I was imprisoned in her house,

1:32 and I said to her,

1:34 "O Salma, is there any good in you?"

1:38 She said, "What is it?"

1:40 I said, "Release me and lend me the horse of Sa'd,

1:45 so that I may fight alongside the Muslims.

1:48 I swear by Allah, if Allah grants me safety,

1:51 I will return and place my legs back in the shackles as they were.

1:55 And if I am killed, then you have been relieved of me."

1:59 She refused and said,

2:01 "What do I have to do with that?"

2:03 So I returned, dragging my shackles,

2:06 my soul yearning for jihad in the way of Allah.

2:10 I saw the Muslims suffering what they were suffering,

2:14 so I said:

2:16 "It is enough grief that the horses are pierced by spears,

2:20 while I am bound in my shackles.

2:24 When I stand, the iron rings hold me, and the doors

2:28 are locked against me, deafening those who call out.

2:32 I have a covenant with Allah that I will not break,

2:36 that if I am released, I will not return to the wine shops."

2:41 Salma then said,

2:44 "I have chosen Allah and I am satisfied with your covenant."

2:47 She released me and gave me the horse of Sa'd,

2:51 and she also gave me a weapon.

2:54 I went out, charging like a lion,

2:58 until I caught up with the Muslim army.

3:01 I began to crush the ranks of the enemy, crushing them completely.

3:05 I charged at the left flank of the army,

3:07 until they retreated.

3:09 Then I charged at the right flank of the army as well,

3:13 until the people were amazed by me.

3:16 They thought I was an angel fighting alongside them.

3:20 Sa'd was amazed as he watched the battle, and he said,

3:25 "The charge is the charge of the piebald horse,

3:28 and the strike is the strike of the Thaqafi,

3:31 yet the Thaqafi is in shackles!"

3:33 So who is the man?

3:35 It was not long,

3:38 before Allah defeated the enemies.

3:41 I returned to my place,

3:43 and I placed my legs back in the shackles.

3:46 Salma, the wife of Sa'd, came,

3:49 and she told her husband my story.

3:51 Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, did nothing

3:54 but release me from the shackles with his own hands.

3:57 He said,

3:59 "I swear by Allah, I hope

4:01 that I will never lash you for wine

4:03 after today, ever."

4:05 I said,

4:08 "And I, by Allah, will not drink it

4:10 after today, ever."
