0:16 I am one of the Meccan Companions, the first to migrate to Medina, and the first ambassador in Islam.

0:27 I was the pride of the youth of Quraysh; I was the pampered youth of Mecca and its most honored young man.

0:35 My mother, Khunas bint Malik, was among the wealthiest people in Mecca.

0:40 She would clothe me in the finest garments and bring me the most precious perfumes.

0:45 Thus, I was the most fragrant of the people of Mecca and the most handsome in appearance.

0:51 When I heard of Islam, I hastened to embrace it.

0:57 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was then at the house of al-Arqam.

1:02 I kept my Islam secret for fear of my mother, who possessed a formidable personality.

1:11 And she held intense hostility toward the Muslims.

1:15 When she learned of my conversion, she imprisoned me and sought to turn me away from my religion.

1:22 But I remained steadfast in my faith.

1:25 She decided to cast me out of her house and deprive me of my wealth.

1:31 She said to me, "Go your own way; I am no longer your mother."

1:37 I replied, "Mother, I am a sincere advisor to you and compassionate toward you."

1:44 "Bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger."

1:51 She answered me in anger, "I swear by the stars,"

1:56 "that if I enter your religion, my judgment will be mocked and my intellect diminished."

2:02 My mother cut off all support she used to provide me and incited the men of our tribe against me.

2:10 I suffered such torture and affliction that it changed my complexion and exhausted my body.

2:16 To the point that my skin would peel off like the skin of a snake.

2:21 I would collapse on the ground from the intensity of hunger, unable to walk.

2:27 My companions would carry me on their shoulders.

2:31 One day, the Prophet, peace be upon him, looked at me as I approached, wearing the skin of a ram.

2:39 He, peace be upon him, said:

2:42 "Look at this man whose heart Allah has illuminated."

2:47 "I saw him between parents who nourished him with the finest food and drink."

2:53 "Yet the love of Allah and His Messenger drew him to what you see."

2:58 I migrated with the first of the oppressed to Abyssinia.

3:03 My companion on the journey was 'Amir ibn Rabi'ah, may Allah be pleased with him.

3:09 He describes me by saying:

3:11 "He was my companion from the day he embraced Islam until he was killed at Uhud."

3:17 "He went out with us to the land of Abyssinia."

3:20 "He was my companion among the people."

3:23 "I have never seen a man with better character or less conflict than him."

3:29 "I saw his feet dripping with blood from the hardship of the journey."

3:35 For he had delicate skin.

3:38 He was not accustomed to the roughness of life like the rest of his companions on the migration.

3:44 Then I migrated to Medina.

3:47 Where the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, appointed me to go there.

3:52 To teach the people the Qur'an and give them deep understanding of the religion.

3:57 I was the first to migrate there.

4:00 And the first to lead the people in Friday prayer there.

4:04 I was the most knowledgeable among them regarding the Qur'an.

4:07 Until they began to call me "The Reciter."

4:11 Through my gentle approach and good conduct, I attracted

4:15 A great number of the people of Medina.

4:18 A large number of its people embraced Islam at my hands.

4:22 Until the mention of Islam spread throughout Medina.

4:26 There was not a single house among the homes of the Ansar

4:29 But that there was mention of Islam within it.

4:33 And Medina became prepared to receive the Prophet, peace be upon him.

4:39 I participated with the Prophet, peace be upon him,

4:43 In the battles of Badr and Uhud.

4:46 And I was the standard-bearer in both.

4:49 At Uhud, Ibn Qami'ah al-Laythi caught sight of me.

4:53 He thought I was the Messenger of Allah.

4:56 This was due to my strong resemblance to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

5:01 He attacked me while I was carrying the standard.

5:04 He struck my right arm and severed it.

5:08 I recited the words of Allah the Almighty:

5:11 ﴾Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him.﴿

5:17 Then I took the standard with my left hand.

5:21 The disbeliever struck it and severed it.

5:24 I leaned over the standard and held it to my chest with my upper arms, saying:

5:30 ﴾Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him.﴿

5:37 Then he attacked me a third time with a spear.

5:40 And he drove it through my body.

5:43 I fell to the ground as a martyr, and the standard fell.

5:48 When they wanted to bury me,

5:52 They found nothing to cover me with in my grave except for a garment of mine.

5:57 If they covered my head with it, my feet were exposed.

6:01 And if they covered my feet with it, my head was exposed.

6:05 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

6:08 "Cover his head with it, and place some Idhkhir grass over his feet."
