0:16 I am one of the Ansar Companions.

0:22 I embraced Islam when I was eighteen years old.

0:26 I witnessed the Second Pledge of al-'Aqabah while I was a beardless youth.

0:30 There was not a single hair on my face.

0:33 I witnessed all the battles with the Prophet, peace be upon him.

0:38 I became a scholar of fiqh and a master memorizer of the Qur'an.

0:43 So much so that the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed his Companions,

0:47 to take the Qur'an from me.

0:50 He described me as the most knowledgeable of the Ummah regarding the lawful and the unlawful.

0:55 He also said of me,

0:58 that I would come on the Day of Resurrection ahead of the scholars,

1:02 by a distance of an arrow's shot.

1:06 The Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to liken me,

1:11 to Ibrahim, peace be upon him.

1:14 Because Ibrahim, the Friend of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:17 “Lo! Abraham was a nation obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the idolaters;” (16:120)

1:20 was obedient to Allah and a teacher of goodness to the people.

1:24 And I was the same.

1:28 The Prophet, peace be upon him, once took,

1:31 my hand and said,

1:34 "By Allah, I truly love you."

1:37 I replied, "And by Allah, I truly love you, O Messenger of Allah."

1:42 He then said, "I advise you,

1:45 do not fail to say at the end of every prayer:

1:49 'O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You,

1:52 and to worship You well.'"

1:55 When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, conquered Makkah,

2:00 he appointed me to stay there,

2:03 to teach the people the Qur'an and instruct them in the religion.

2:07 Before his passing, peace be upon him,

2:10 he sent me to Yemen.

2:13 He walked with me, bidding me farewell and giving me counsel,

2:16 while I was mounted,

2:18 and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

2:21 was walking beside my mount.

2:24 When he finished, he said,

2:26 "You may not see me after this year of mine,

2:29 and perhaps you will pass by my mosque and my grave."

2:34 I wept out of grief at the separation from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

2:40 When Abu 'Ubaydah, may Allah be pleased with him, was struck by the plague of 'Amwas,

2:46 while we were in the conquests of the Levant,

2:49 during the caliphate of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,

2:53 he appointed me as his successor over the people.

2:56 The people said to me,

2:58 "Pray to Allah to lift this affliction from us."

3:02 I replied, "It is not an affliction,

3:06 but rather a supplication of your Prophet,

3:09 the passing of the righteous before you,

3:12 and a martyrdom that Allah grants to whom He wills among His servants."

3:18 Then I said,

3:20 "O Allah, grant my family the largest share of it."

3:26 My two wives and my son were struck by it and all died.

3:31 I was struck in my thumb,

3:33 and I began to say,

3:35 "I would not trade it for the finest of camels."

3:39 "O Allah, it is small, so bless it."

3:44 Allah answered my prayer,

3:46 and it was the cause of my death.

3:50 At the moment of my death,

3:52 I began to look toward the sky and say,

3:56 "O Allah, I used to fear You,

3:59 but today I hope in You."

4:02 "O Allah, You know that I did not love the world and long life in it for planting trees,

4:10 or for digging rivers,

4:12 but for enduring the thirst of hot days, for standing in prayer at night,

4:17 and for sitting with scholars in circles of dhikr."

4:21 "O Allah, accept my soul with the best way You accept a believing soul."

4:28 Then my soul departed, far from my family,

4:32 calling to Allah and striving in His path.

4:37 So, who am I?
