0:16 I am a Qurayshi female Companion.

0:21 I embraced Islam in Makkah before the Hijrah.

0:24 And I migrated to Madinah.

0:26 I was among the most intelligent and virtuous of women.

0:30 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to visit us.

0:34 And he would take a midday nap at our home.

0:36 I had set aside a special garment for him for this purpose.

0:40 I kept this garment and the bedding.

0:43 Upon which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to sleep.

0:48 I was among the few who knew how to read and write during the Jahiliyyah.

0:54 Furthermore, I was a physician and a practitioner of Ruqyah.

0:58 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave me a house in Madinah.

1:03 So that the house would become a center of learning for women.

1:08 I taught the women of the Muslims there how to read, write, practice medicine, and perform Ruqyah.

1:14 Thus, I am the first female teacher in Islam.

1:19 Among those who studied under me was.

1:22 Hafsah bint Umar.

1:24 The wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

1:28 I used to go out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on his military expeditions.

1:34 To treat the wounded.

1:37 The Companions used to come to my house for medical treatment.

1:41 One day, a man from the Ansar was afflicted with a condition called 'al-namlah'.

1:47 These are sores that appear on the sides of the body.

1:50 It was named as such because the patient feels in the area of the sores.

1:55 As if an ant is walking on them and biting them.

1:59 So they directed him to me.

2:01 He came to me and asked me to perform Ruqyah on him.

2:04 I said to him:

2:06 "By Allah, I have not performed Ruqyah on anyone since I embraced Islam."

2:09 The man went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:14 And informed him of what I had said.

2:16 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, summoned me.

2:20 And said:

2:23 So I presented it to him.

2:25 He said:

2:30 "Just as you taught her writing."

2:33 Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to defer to my opinion.

2:38 He cared for me and favored me over other women.

2:42 And since that time:

2:44 I came to him one day.

2:46 And found 'Atikah bint Usayd at his door.

2:49 We entered together to see him.

2:52 We spoke for a while in his presence.

2:54 He called for a mat.

2:56 And gave it to me.

2:58 Then he called for a lesser mat.

3:00 And gave it to 'Atikah.

3:02 'Atikah said:

3:04 "May your hands be covered in dust, O Umar!

3:06 I am earlier than her in Islam.

3:08 And I am your cousin, unlike her.

3:11 You sent for me.

3:13 And she came to you of her own accord.

3:15 Yet you give her something better than what you gave me."

3:19 He said to her:

3:22 "I had only set that one aside for you.

3:25 But when you both gathered.

3:27 I remembered that she is closer to the Messenger of Allah,

3:30 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, than you are.

3:33 So I gave her precedence over you."

3:35 Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived one day.

3:39 For the Fajr prayer.

3:40 Then he passed by me and said:

3:43 "O Umm Sulayman,

3:45 I did not see Sulayman at the morning prayer."

3:48 I said to him:

3:50 "He spent the night in prayer.

3:52 And his eyes overcame him."

3:54 Umar said:

3:56 "For me to attend the morning prayer in congregation.

3:59 Is more beloved to me than standing in prayer for the whole night."

4:03 One day, I saw some young men walking with a slow, deliberate gait.

4:08 And speaking softly.

4:10 I said: "What is this?"

4:13 They said: "We are ascetics."

4:16 I said to them:

4:18 "By Allah, when Umar spoke, he was heard.

4:22 When he walked, he moved quickly.

4:24 And when he struck, he caused pain.

4:26 And he, by Allah, is the true ascetic."
