0:16 I am one of the female Companions.

0:21 Allah revealed a Qur'an concerning me that is recited.

0:25 This is because my husband, Aws Ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him),

0:30 became angry with me one day and said to me, "You are to me as the back of my mother."

0:36 Then, he wished to reconcile with me.

0:39 I said to him, "No, by the One in whose hand is my soul,

0:43 you shall not touch me, for you have said what you said,

0:47 until Allah judges between us with His decree."

0:50 Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

0:56 and I sat before him.

0:58 I mentioned to him what I had encountered with my husband,

1:01 and I began to complain to him of his poor temperament.

1:05 Then I mentioned to him what he had said to me regarding the zihar (the declaration of divorce).

1:09 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

1:12 "I do not see you as anything but forbidden to him."

1:15 I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

1:18 my age has advanced and my bones have grown frail,

1:22 and I have children by him.

1:24 If I leave them with him, they will be lost;

1:27 if I keep them with me, they will go hungry."

1:30 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) kept saying,

1:35 "I do not see you as anything but forbidden to him."

1:38 I continued to argue with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

1:43 and by Allah, I did not leave my place

1:46 until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was overcome

1:50 by what usually overcame him of the revelation.

1:53 Then it was lifted from him,

1:55 and he said to me,

1:57 "Allah has revealed a Qur'an concerning you and your companion."

2:01 Then he recited to me the beginning of Surah al-Mujadilah.

2:05 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then said to me,

2:09 "Command him to free a slave."

2:12 I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

2:14 he does not have the means to free one."

2:17 He said,

2:18 "Then let him fast for two consecutive months."

2:21 I said,

2:23 "By Allah, he is a very old man;

2:26 he has no strength for fasting."

2:28 He said,

2:29 "Then let him feed sixty poor people."

2:32 I said,

2:34 "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

2:36 he does not have that either."

2:39 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then gave me some dates,

2:44 and said,

2:45 "Go and give them as charity on his behalf."

2:49 "Then treat your cousin well."

2:52 So I did.

2:53 One day,

2:55 the Caliph Umar Ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of the mosque,

3:00 accompanied by al-Jarud al-'Abdi,

3:02 who was one of the nobles of the Arabs.

3:05 Umar saw me on the side of the road,

3:08 and he greeted me.

3:10 I returned his greeting,

3:12 and then I said,

3:13 "Well, well, Umar!

3:15 I remember you when you were called 'Umayr in the market of 'Ukaz,

3:20 frightening the children with your stick.

3:22 Not much time passed before you were called Umar,

3:27 and not much time passed after that before you were called Commander of the Believers.

3:32 So fear Allah regarding your subjects,

3:35 and know that whoever fears the threat of punishment,

3:38 finds the distant near,

3:40 and whoever fears death,

3:42 fears missing his opportunity."

3:44 Al-Jarud said to me,

3:46 "You have spoken too boldly to the Commander of the Believers."

3:50 But Umar said to him,

3:52 "Leave her be.

3:53 Do you not know who she is?

3:55 She is the one whose words Allah heard from above seven heavens.

4:00 By Allah, Umar is more deserving of listening to her."
