0:16 I am a female Companion from the Ansar, among the first of the people of Medina to embrace Islam.

0:25 I was one of the two women who pledged allegiance to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, at the Second Pledge of al-Aqaba.

0:33 I participated in most of the battles of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:39 I witnessed the Battle of Uhud alongside my husband and my sons.

0:43 When the Muslims were defeated,

0:45 I rallied to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:49 I began to engage in the fighting,

0:52 defending the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, with my sword,

0:57 and shooting with my bow.

0:59 I continued until I sustained wounds.

1:03 When the people retreated from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, at the Battle of Uhud,

1:09 and there remained with him only a handful of men, not even ten,

1:14 I stood with my sons and my husband before him, defending him,

1:19 while the people passed by in retreat.

1:22 The Prophet, peace be upon him, saw that I had no shield with me,

1:27 and he saw a man retreating who had a shield.

1:30 He said to the man with the shield,

1:32 "Give your shield to the one who is fighting."

1:35 He threw the shield,

1:37 and I took it and began to shield the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with it.

1:44 A man approached me on a horse,

1:47 and struck me,

1:49 but I parried his blow with my shield.

1:51 When he turned away,

1:53 I struck the hock of his horse with my sword,

1:56 and he fell onto his back.

1:59 The Prophet, peace be upon him, began to call out to my son,

2:03 "Your mother! Your mother!"

2:06 My son helped me against him until we killed him.

2:10 While we were in the midst of the fighting,

2:14 my son was wounded,

2:16 and his blood began to flow,

2:18 but I was preoccupied with fighting the enemies.

2:22 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, called out to me,

2:26 and I became aware of my son.

2:28 I went to him,

2:30 carrying bandages at my waist

2:32 that I had prepared for wounds,

2:34 and I bound his wound.

2:36 The Prophet, peace be upon him, stood watching us.

2:41 Then I said,

2:43 "My son,

2:44 get up and fight the people!"

2:46 The Prophet, peace be upon him, began to say,

2:50 "Who could endure what you endure, O Umm 'Umarah?"

2:54 Then the man who had struck my son approached,

2:57 and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me,

3:01 "This is the one who struck your son."

3:03 I intercepted him,

3:05 and struck his leg, severing it.

3:08 I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, smile,

3:13 until I saw his molars.

3:15 He said,

3:17 "You have taken your revenge, O Umm 'Umarah."

3:20 Then we began to strike him with our weapons until he died.

3:24 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

3:26 "Praise be to Allah who granted you victory,

3:29 comforted your eyes regarding your enemy,

3:32 and let you see your vengeance with your own eyes."

3:35 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, also said,

3:39 "The station of Umm 'Umarah today

3:42 is better than the station of so-and-so and so-and-so."

3:45 He, peace be upon him,

3:48 would not look to the right or the left

3:51 without seeing me fighting,

3:54 without seeing me fighting in his defense.

3:57 I sustained thirteen wounds that day,

4:01 and the greatest of them

4:03 was the blow from Ibn Qami'ah on my shoulder,

4:06 which I treated for a full year.

4:09 When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saw

4:13 my wound on my shoulder,

4:15 he said to my son,

4:17 "Bind her wound."

4:20 "O Allah, make them my companions in Paradise."

4:24 I was overjoyed by his supplication,

4:26 and I no longer cared about what had befallen me.

4:29 Then the caller of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, called out

4:34 to set out for Hamra' al-Asad.

4:37 I tightened my clothes to go out with them,

4:41 but I could not due to the severity of my injuries.

4:44 When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, returned

4:48 from Hamra' al-Asad,

4:50 he sent my brother to ask about me.

4:53 He returned to him to inform him of my safety,

4:57 and the Prophet, peace be upon him, was pleased by that.
