0:16 I was an Abyssinian woman, a freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), whom he inherited from his father.

0:25 When his mother passed away, I raised him and took care of him, so much so that he used to call me, "O mother!"

0:34 He used to say about me, "She is the remnant of my household, and she is my mother after my own mother."

0:42 Then he emancipated me when he married Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her).

0:47 I remained with him, serving him throughout his life (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

0:53 I was the only woman who accompanied the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)—

0:59 from the day of his birth until the day of his death.

1:03 I embraced Islam among the first people, then migrated alone to Medina.

1:09 When I was near Al-Ruhā', I grew desperately thirsty while fasting, and I had no water with me.

1:16 Exhaustion from thirst overcame me until I was on the verge of death.

1:20 So I lay down on the ground, then opened my eyes,

1:25 and suddenly a bucket of water descended upon me from the sky.

1:30 I took it and drank from it until my thirst was fully quenched.

1:34 Never again was I struck by thirst for the rest of my life.

1:39 I used to fast on scorching hot days,

1:43 yet I would not feel any thirst at all.

1:47 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave me the glad tidings of Paradise.

1:51 He said, "Whoever would be pleased to marry a woman from the people of Paradise,

1:57 let him marry this one," pointing to me.

2:01 So Zayd ibn Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) married me,

2:05 and I bore him Usamah, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah and the son of his beloved.

2:11 I went out with twenty women to the Battle of Uhud

2:14 to provide water and tend to the wounded.

2:18 When I saw the men fleeing from the battlefield,

2:22 I began throwing dust into the faces of those who were fleeing,

2:26 and I taunted some of them, saying:

2:29 "Take the spindle and hand over your sword!"

2:32 I defended the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

2:35 with a sword on that day.

2:38 Ibn Al-'Iriqah shot an arrow at me,

2:41 and it struck me.

2:43 So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took an arrow,

2:46 handed it to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him),

2:50 and said to him, "Shoot him!"

2:53 Sa'd shot him and struck him,

2:55 sending the disbeliever falling head over heels.

2:58 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) laughed

3:01 and said, "Sa'd has avenged her!"

3:05 I also defended the honor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

3:11 during the Incident of the Slander (Al-Ifk).

3:13 When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked me

3:17 about 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her),

3:20 I said to him,

3:21 "Far be it from my hearing and my sight

3:23 that I should ever know or suspect anything of her except good!"

3:28 Because I was an Abyssinian woman,

3:32 I could not pronounce certain letters properly,

3:35 and it was difficult for me to say,

3:37 "As-salāmu 'alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh" (Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you).

3:41 So I would say, "Lā salām" (No peace),

3:44 or "Salām 'lā 'alaykum" (Peace not upon you).

3:47 So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted me a concession

3:50 to say

3:52 simply "As-salām."

3:55 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to laugh with me and joke with me.

4:00 Among those occasions:

4:02 I once said to him, "Carry me [on a mount]."

4:05 He replied,

4:06 "I shall carry you upon the offspring of a she-camel."

4:09 I said to him,

4:11 "O Messenger of Allah,

4:13 it will not be able to bear my weight, and I do not want it!"

4:16 He smiled and said,

4:18 "I will only carry you upon the offspring of a she-camel."

4:21 I walked away from him,

4:23 so he called out to me and said,

4:25 "Are camels born from anything other than she-camels?"

4:30 I used to treat the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

4:33 just as a mother treats her child.

4:36 Sometimes I would insist that he eat from my food,

4:40 and I would often weep whenever he wept (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

4:46 After the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

4:50 Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) came to visit me.

4:55 When I saw them, I wept.

4:58 They said to me,

5:00 "What makes you weep?

5:02 Do you not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger?"

5:06 I replied,

5:08 "I know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

5:12 has gone to that which is better than what he had here.

5:16 But I am weeping

5:18 because divine revelation from the heavens has come to an end."

5:22 My words moved them both to tears,

5:25 and they began to weep along with me.
