0:16 I am the freedman of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the son of his freedman,

0:23 and his beloved and the son of his beloved.

0:28 I was born before the Hijrah and lived under the care of Islam,

0:32 and I was raised in the Prophetic household.

0:35 The Prophet (peace be upon him) loved me immensely,

0:42 for he would hold me along with al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him),

0:46 and say: "O Allah, love them both, for I love them."

0:52 He (peace be upon him) used to seat me on his thigh and pray for me,

0:58 and he would often carry me in front of him on his mount,

1:02 caring for me with utmost tenderness.

1:05 One day, my nose was running, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) intended

1:11 to wipe the mucus away from me with his noble hand.

1:14 Thereupon, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Let me wipe it away from him, O Messenger of Allah."

1:22 But he (peace be upon him) replied: "O 'A'ishah, love him, for indeed I love him."

1:31 I was dark-skinned, whereas my father was fair-skinned,

1:37 which caused some people to doubt the legitimacy of my lineage to my father (may Allah be pleased with him)

1:43 because of the difference in our skin colors.

1:46 One day, I slept beside my father and we covered our heads with a cloak,

1:51 leaving our feet uncovered.

1:54 Then Mujazziz al-Mudliji, the physiognomist, passed by us

1:58 and remarked: "These feet belong to one another,"

2:03 having recognized the clear resemblance between them.

2:06 The Prophet (peace be upon him) was overjoyed by this,

2:11 to the extent that he entered upon 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her)

2:15 with his radiant face gleaming with delight and gladness at what the physiognomist had said,

2:21 which thoroughly refuted the claims of those who spoke about us without knowledge.

2:26 One day, the Commander of the Believers, 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), sat

2:32 distributing funds from the public treasury among the Muslims.

2:35 He gave his son, 'Abdullah, his share,

2:38 and then my turn came,

2:40 and 'Umar gave me double what he had given his son 'Abdullah.

2:45 So 'Abdullah questioned his father, saying:

2:49 "Why have you favored him over me,

2:51 when I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

2:55 battles that he did not witness?"

2:57 'Umar answered him, saying:

2:59 "O my son,

3:01 he was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah than you were,

3:05 and his father was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah than your father was!"

3:10 Thus, I gave preference to what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) loved over what I loved.

3:17 The Companions well recognized my status with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him);

3:22 therefore, when they wished to intercede with the Messenger of Allah regarding the woman who had committed theft,

3:29 they came to me so that I might intercede on her behalf,

3:32 hoping that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) might accept it from me.

3:37 But when I spoke to him concerning her,

3:40 the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) changed color,

3:44 and he said:

3:46 "Do you dare intercede regarding one of the prescribed limits set by Allah?"

3:50 I became terrified and said:

3:52 "Ask forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah."

3:55 When evening came,

3:57 the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood to deliver a sermon;

4:01 he praised Allah as He deserves to be praised,

4:05 and then said:

4:06 "To proceed:

4:08 The people before you were ruined only because

4:11 whenever a noble person among them stole, they would let him go,

4:15 but whenever a weak person among them stole, they would enforce the legal punishment upon him.

4:20 By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad,

4:23 even if Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, were to steal,

4:26 I would surely sever her hand."

4:29 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave orders

4:32 concerning that woman,

4:34 and her hand was severed.

4:36 The engraving on my ring was:

4:40 "The beloved of the Messenger of Allah."
