Get to know the Companions and the scholars, and the most exalted among them.
0:12
A serious challenge: who am I?
0:16
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
0:23
I am among the leaders of the Arabs.
0:26
I was a master of my people in both the pre-Islamic era and in Islam.
0:30
I came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, in the ninth year [of the Hijra].
0:35
As part of the delegation of Banu Tamim.
0:37
He honored me and said:
0:39
"This is the master of the desert dwellers."
0:42
I was known for my forbearance, intellect, and generosity.
0:45
I was a poet, a horseman, and a man of courage.
0:49
I led many raids.
0:51
I was victorious in my military expeditions.
0:54
I had forbidden alcohol to myself even before Islam.
0:58
I was among those who used to bury their daughters alive in the pre-Islamic era.
1:04
The reason for that was:
1:06
That some people raided us.
1:09
And they took our women and our wealth.
1:12
The one who raided me,
1:14
Took my daughter for himself.
1:17
When we made peace,
1:19
I wanted to take my daughter back.
1:21
The man who had taken her gave her the choice between returning to me,
1:25
Or remaining his wife.
1:28
She chose to remain his wife.
1:31
So I swore that I would never have another daughter after that,
1:35
Without burying her alive.
1:37
Because of what had happened.
1:40
Thus, I buried eight daughters alive before Islam.
1:44
When I embraced Islam,
1:46
I mentioned this to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
1:50
He said to me:
1:52
"Free a slave for each one of them."
1:56
And I did so.
1:59
One day, I was sitting in the courtyard of my house,
2:02
With my sword belt wrapped around my legs.
2:05
I was speaking to my people.
2:07
While I was in that state,
2:10
A man was brought to me, bound,
2:12
And another man lay dead.
2:14
It was said to me:
2:16
"This is your nephew;
2:18
He has killed your son."
2:19
By Allah, I did not loosen my posture,
2:22
Nor did I stop my speech.
2:24
When I had finished it,
2:26
I turned to my nephew,
2:28
And I said to him:
2:29
"O my nephew,
2:31
How evil is what you have done.
2:33
You have wronged your kin,
2:35
You have struck yourself with your own arrow,
2:37
And you have killed your cousin."
2:40
Then I said to another son of mine:
2:43
"Rise, my son,
2:45
Untie your cousin,
2:47
Bury your brother,
2:49
And drive a hundred she-camels to his mother,
2:52
As compensation for her son,
2:54
For she is a stranger [in this land]."
2:56
So, who am I?

The best of generations in their stances and examples,
3:18
Following the Messenger whenever he strove or spoke.
3:23
They were here, watering the clouds of our lives,
3:28
They passed away, yet their memory rises high within us.
3:33
They departed and cast a question into the conscience:
3:38
Is there a star like them that has risen and shone?
3:43
They filled life with pride through their deeds,
3:48
And the world of mankind flourished with their grace.
