0:16 I am one of the Ansar Companions.

0:21 I embraced Islam upon the Prophet’s entry into Medina.

0:25 I participated with the Prophet, peace be upon him, in his military expeditions.

0:30 I loved jihad despite my poverty.

0:35 Then came the expedition of Tabuk.

0:38 Which was also called the Expedition of Hardship (Ghazwat al-'Usra).

0:42 Because it occurred during a time of hardship for the people.

0:45 With intense heat.

0:47 A great distance to travel.

0:49 And a scarcity of wealth and mounts.

0:52 The Prophet, peace be upon him, urged everyone to contribute and spend for it.

0:57 He said:

0:59 "Whoever equips the army of hardship shall have Paradise."

1:03 The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, responded to the call of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

1:09 The wealthy among them set the most magnificent examples of generosity and giving.

1:14 Foremost among them was 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, may Allah be pleased with him.

1:19 Women brought whatever they could of charity and jewelry.

1:24 And placed it before the Prophet, peace be upon him.

1:29 The poor among the Companions also participated as much as they could.

1:34 Even Abu 'Aqil, may Allah be pleased with him,

1:38 Came with half a sa' of dates.

1:40 And placed it before the Prophet, peace be upon him.

1:45 The hypocrites mocked him for it.

1:49 I and some other Muslims remained behind.

1:51 We found nothing to fight upon, nor anything to spend.

1:55 So we missed out on the jihad.

1:57 And were unable to contribute.

2:00 We were deeply saddened by this.

2:03 Our souls were nearly departing out of grief for having stayed behind.

2:08 And our inability to participate in this expedition.

2:12 Thus, we were called "the Weepers" (al-Bakka'un).

2:15 Allah the Almighty revealed concerning us His saying:

2:19 "There is no blame on the weak,"

2:23 "Nor on the sick,"

2:25 “Not unto the weak nor unto the sick nor unto those who can find naught to spend is any fault (to be imputed though they stay at home) if they are true to Allah and His messenger. Not unto the good is there any road (of blame). Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (9:91)

2:31 “Not unto the weak nor unto the sick nor unto those who can find naught to spend is any fault (to be imputed though they stay at home) if they are true to Allah and His messenger. Not unto the good is there any road (of blame). Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (9:91)

2:35 “Not unto the weak nor unto the sick nor unto those who can find naught to spend is any fault (to be imputed though they stay at home) if they are true to Allah and His messenger. Not unto the good is there any road (of blame). Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (9:91)

2:41 "And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

2:45 “Nor unto those whom, when they came to thee (asking) that thou shouldst mount them, thou didst tell: I cannot find whereon to mount you. They turned back with eyes flowing with tears, for sorrow that they could not find the means to spend.” (9:92)

2:52 "For their inability to find means,"

2:53 “Nor unto those whom, when they came to thee (asking) that thou shouldst mount them, thou didst tell: I cannot find whereon to mount you. They turned back with eyes flowing with tears, for sorrow that they could not find the means to spend.” (9:92)

3:05 "They turned back, their eyes overflowing with tears out of grief,"

3:10 "That they could not find anything to spend."

3:14 On the night of that expedition,

3:20 I stood in prayer during the night and wept.

3:23 Then I said:

3:25 "O Allah, You have commanded jihad,"

3:28 "And encouraged it,"

3:30 "Yet You did not provide me with what I need to equip myself,"

3:33 "To go out with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

3:38 "And You did not place in the hands of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,"

3:42 "Anything to mount me upon."

3:44 "O Allah, I give as charity my honor to every Muslim,"

3:49 "For every injustice done to me,"

3:52 "Whether in wealth, body, or reputation."

3:55 Then I went out among the people in the morning.

3:58 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

4:02 "Where is the one who gave charity last night?"

4:05 No one stood up.

4:07 Then he said, "Where is the one who gave his honor as charity last night?"

4:12 So I stood up and went to him.

4:14 He, peace be upon him, said:

4:17 "Rejoice, for by Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad,"

4:21 "Allah has accepted your charity."

4:25 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, returned,

4:28 From the expedition of Tabuk,

4:30 And approached Medina,

4:32 He gave glad tidings to the people regarding our state, we who were excused,

4:36 Those who could not go out for jihad,

4:39 Due to poverty or illness.

4:41 He said, "Indeed, in Medina there are people,"

4:44 "Who did not travel any distance,"

4:46 "Nor cross any valley,"

4:48 "But they were with you."

4:50 They asked, "O Messenger of Allah,"

4:52 "While they were in Medina?"

4:54 He said, "Yes, while they were in Medina,"

4:57 "Held back by a valid excuse."

4:59 So Allah recorded our reward due to the sincerity of our intention.

5:04 And I became known as the one who gave his honor as charity.
