0:22 I met Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him,

0:26 when he first arrived in Medina.

0:28 I heard the Qur'an from him,

0:30 and the love of Islam entered my heart.

0:34 I embraced Islam immediately,

0:36 even before the conversion of Usayd ibn Hudayr

0:39 and Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with them both.

0:43 I never ceased reciting the Qur'an at any moment,

0:47 to the point that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

0:50 heard my recitation one day while I was in the mosque.

0:54 He recognized my voice,

0:56 so he prayed for me and said,

0:58 "O Allah, forgive him."

1:00 The Prophet, peace be upon him, appointed me

1:03 to distribute the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn,

1:06 just as he appointed me as the commander of his guard

1:09 during the Battle of Tabuk.

1:11 I visited the Prophet, peace be upon him,

1:15 one night in the deep darkness,

1:18 accompanied by Usayd ibn Hudayr, may Allah be pleased with him.

1:22 When we stood up to leave,

1:25 my staff lit up with a light like a lamp,

1:28 a miracle from Allah for us,

1:30 and by it, we could see the path.

1:33 When we parted ways,

1:35 the staff of each of us lit up,

1:38 and he could see his way until he reached his home.

1:42 I witnessed all the battles with the Prophet, peace be upon him,

1:48 and despite my intense love for the Qur'an,

1:51 I was one of the renowned brave warriors.

1:54 During the Battle of Dhat al-Riqa',

1:56 we inflicted losses upon the enemy,

1:59 and the wife of one of their men was taken captive.

2:02 Her husband vowed to pursue us

2:05 and not return until he had shed the blood of the Muslims

2:09 or rescued his wife.

2:11 He caught up with us,

2:13 and when night fell,

2:15 we stopped to rest in a mountain pass.

2:19 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

2:22 "Who will stand guard for us tonight?"

2:24 So I stood up, along with 'Ammar ibn Yasir,

2:27 may Allah be pleased with him,

2:29 and we said, "We will, O Messenger of Allah."

2:32 He, peace be upon him, said,

2:35 "Very well."

2:36 I said to my brother 'Ammar,

2:38 as we stood at the mouth of the pass,

2:40 "Which part of the night would you like to sleep in?

2:44 The first or the last?"

2:46 He replied, "I will sleep in the first part."

2:49 So he went a short distance away from me and slept,

2:53 while I went to stand guard.

2:55 While I was in the stillness of the night,

2:58 amidst the pitch-black darkness,

3:01 my soul longed for prayer and the recitation of the Qur'an.

3:05 I stood up, pronounced the takbir,

3:07 and began reciting Surah al-Kahf.

3:10 The man came and stood at the bottom of the valley,

3:15 and seeing me from afar standing in my place,

3:19 he shot an arrow at me, which struck me.

3:22 I pulled the arrow out and cast it aside,

3:25 and continued my recitation.

3:28 He shot a second arrow at me,

3:30 so I pulled it out and continued my prayer.

3:34 Then he shot a third arrow at me,

3:36 and I pulled it out.

3:37 However, I remembered my duty to guard the Muslims,

3:41 and I feared that the enemy might approach from my side,

3:44 so I pronounced the takbir, bowed, and prostrated.

3:47 Then I went to 'Ammar and woke him up.

3:51 When the polytheist saw us,

3:53 he fled, having fulfilled his vow.

3:56 When 'Ammar saw me,

3:59 with blood streaming from me,

4:01 he said to me, "Why did you not wake me up the moment he shot you?"

4:06 I replied, "I was in the middle of a Surah I was reciting,

4:10 and I did not want to interrupt it

4:13 until I had finished it.

4:15 By Allah, were it not for my fear of neglecting a post

4:18 that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

4:21 had entrusted me to guard, I would have preferred death to interrupting it."

4:27 I participated in the wars against the apostates after the death of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

4:34 and I fought valiantly on the day of Yamama.

4:38 On the night before the battle, I saw in my dream as if the sky had opened for me,

4:44 and I entered it, then it closed behind me.

4:48 I said to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, "By Allah, this is martyrdom."

4:55 When the day broke and the fighting began,

4:58 I saw the Muslim ranks wavering before the army of Musaylima the Liar.

5:04 I climbed a high piece of ground and began to shout,

5:09 "O Ansar, distinguish yourselves from the people and break the sheaths of your swords!

5:16 Do not let Islam be attacked from your direction."

5:20 I kept repeating that call until about four hundred of them gathered around me,

5:27 led by Thabit ibn Qays, al-Bara' ibn Malik, and Abu Dujana,

5:33 the bearer of the sword of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

5:38 We advanced with all our might toward Musaylima and those with him,

5:43 until we drove them into the Garden of Death,

5:47 where their fate was sealed.

5:50 As for me, I sustained wounds to my face and the front of my body,

5:57 until I fell as a martyr, advancing and not retreating.
