0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, from the Ansar.

0:26 I am one of the people of the Qur'an.

0:29 I am the judge of Damascus.

0:31 I am the sage of this Ummah.

0:33 I am among the ascetic worshippers.

0:36 I embraced Islam late, on the day of Badr.

0:40 At that time, I had an idol in my house that I worshipped.

0:44 Then ‘Abdullah Ibn Rawahah and Muhammad Ibn Maslamah, may Allah be pleased with them both, came to my house.

0:51 They broke my idol and left.

0:54 I returned and saw what had become of my gods.

0:58 I began to gather the pieces of the idol.

1:01 And I said, "Woe to you!"

1:03 "If you had any power, would you not have defended yourself?"

1:07 My wife said to me,

1:09 "If your god were of any benefit or could defend anyone,"

1:13 "It would have defended itself and benefited itself."

1:16 I said to her, "You have spoken the truth."

1:19 "Prepare water for me to bathe."

1:22 So I bathed.

1:24 I put on my clothes.

1:26 I went to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and embraced Islam.

1:32 I was a merchant before Islam.

1:35 When I embraced Islam, I tried to combine trade with worship.

1:40 But they could not be reconciled.

1:42 So I left trade and devoted myself to worship.

1:46 I recited the Qur'an.

1:48 I would fast during the day and stand in prayer during the night.

1:51 Until Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me,

1:55 When he saw my state in my house,

1:58 And heard my wife’s complaint,

2:00 "Indeed, your body has a right over you,"

2:03 "And your Lord has a right over you,"

2:06 "And your family has a right over you."

2:09 "Fast and break your fast, pray and attend to your family."

2:13 "Give everyone who has a right their due."

2:16 When I mentioned that to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

2:21 He said,

2:22 "Salman has spoken the truth."

2:25 The Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, sent me to the Levant (al-Sham).

2:30 To teach the people the Qur'an.

2:33 And to be their most knowledgeable in the religion.

2:35 I began by teaching the Qur'an.

2:38 I was the first to establish memorization circles in Islam.

2:43 More than a thousand men would gather around me.

2:47 I appointed a tutor for every ten of them.

2:51 And I would walk among them, standing.

2:54 If one of them mastered his portion,

2:57 He would come to me to recite it to me.

3:01 I participated in the Islamic conquests.

3:06 When we conquered Cyprus,

3:09 I passed by the captives and wept.

3:12 They said to me,

3:14 "Do you weep on a day like this?"

3:17 "A day in which Allah has honored Islam and its people?"

3:21 I said,

3:22 "While this Ummah was once powerful and dominant,"

3:26 "When they disobeyed Allah,"

3:28 "They encountered what you see."

3:30 "How insignificant are the creatures to Allah when they disobey Him!"

3:35 I had three hundred and sixty friends for the sake of Allah.

3:40 I would pray for them in my prayers.

3:43 They asked me about that.

3:45 I said,

3:47 "There is no man who prays for his brother in his absence,"

3:51 "But that Allah appoints two angels over him who say,"

3:55 "'And for you the same.'"

3:57 "Would I not desire for the angels to pray for me?"
