0:16 I am one of the Mothers of the Believers.

0:21 I am the cousin of the trustworthy Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:27 My name was Barrah, and my kunyah was Umm Hakim.

0:31 The Prophet, peace be upon him, changed my name.

0:35 I was among the first of the female emigrants (Muhajirat).

0:39 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, proposed to me.

0:42 He proposed on behalf of his freedman, Zayd Ibn Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him.

0:46 I refused.

0:48 Then Allah the Exalted revealed His words:

0:50 “And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair; and whoso is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goeth astray in error manifest.” (33:36)

1:11 I had no choice but to obey Allah and His Messenger.

1:15 So I married Zayd.

1:18 Later, Zayd divorced me.

1:21 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, married me.

1:25 By the command of Allah the Exalted.

1:27 This was for a divine wisdom.

1:30 It was intended to dismantle the pre-Islamic custom of adoption.

1:36 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, entered into marriage with me.

1:40 Without a guardian or witnesses.

1:43 I used to take pride in this over the other Mothers of the Believers.

1:47 I would say to them:

1:49 "Your families gave you in marriage,

1:51 but Allah married me off from above the seven heavens."

1:57 The Prophet, peace be upon him, described me.

2:00 As being 'awwah.

2:02 Meaning, one who is humble and supplicates often.

2:05 I loved giving charity.

2:07 And showing kindness to the poor.

2:10 I used to work with my own hands.

2:12 And I would give charity from my own earnings.

2:14 To the point that I became known as the Mother of the Poor.

2:18 The Prophet, peace be upon him, once said.

2:21 One day to his wives:

2:23 "The first of you to join me

2:26 is the one with the longest hand."

2:28 After he passed away, we used to stretch our hands against the wall.

2:32 To see whose hand was the longest.

2:35 My hand was actually short.

2:37 Yet, I was the first of his wives to join the Prophet, peace be upon him.

2:44 Then the people realized that what was meant

2:47 was the one with the longest hand in terms of charity, generosity, and good deeds.

2:52 My love for charity reached such a point

2:56 that I said when death approached me:

2:59 "I have already prepared my shroud.

3:02 If 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, sends me a shroud,

3:06 then give one of them away in charity.

3:09 And if you are able, when you lower me into my grave,

3:13 to give the ties of my shroud in charity,

3:16 then do so."
