0:16 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

0:22 a native of Mecca, and the son of one of its chief leaders.

0:27 Both my brother 'Abdullah and I embraced Islam,

0:30 but we kept our faith secret.

0:33 When my father found out about our Islam,

0:36 he imprisoned us, bound us in chains, and tortured us,

0:39 preventing us from emigrating with the Muslims to Medina.

0:45 So my brother feigned before them that he had renounced Islam

0:49 and returned to their religion, so they released him.

0:53 Then my brother 'Abdullah marched out with the polytheists when the call to arms came for Badr,

0:58 traveling alongside my father and under his financial care,

1:01 with my father harboring no doubt that he had reverted to his pagan ways.

1:05 But when the Muslims and polytheists clashed at Badr,

1:09 and the two hosts caught sight of each other,

1:11 my brother 'Abdullah defected to the Muslim ranks,

1:14 coming before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:18 before the battle began,

1:20 and thus fought at Badr as a Muslim.

1:23 That enraged my father with a tremendous fury.

1:27 As for me, I remained in captivity

1:30 until the Muslims arrived to perform the Umrah in the sixth year after the Hijrah.

1:35 The Quraysh opposed them and barred them from entering the Sanctuary,

1:40 so they encamped at al-Hudaybiyyah.

1:42 Emissaries came and went between the two parties

1:46 until they agreed upon terms of peace.

1:48 The Quraysh sent my father to ratify the treaty with the Prophet, peace be upon him.

1:54 And while they were writing out the terms of the treaty,

1:59 I suddenly emerged, fleeing toward the Muslims, hobbling in my chains,

2:04 until I collapsed before them.

2:08 When my father saw me, he said:

2:11 "This is the very first matter upon which I demand you uphold the terms, O Muhammad!

2:15 Hand him back to me!"

2:17 The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied:

2:20 "Release him to me as a gift."

2:22 But he adamantly refused.

2:23 So the Prophet, peace be upon him, handed me back.

2:27 At that, I cried out at the top of my voice:

2:29 "O assembly of Muslims!

2:31 Am I to be returned to the polytheists so that they may persecute me away from my religion?!"

2:36 Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me:

2:40 "Be patient and seek your reward with Allah,

2:42 for Allah will surely make for you and the oppressed ones with you a relief and a way out.

2:49 Indeed, we have made a treaty of peace with these people,

2:52 and we will never break our word."

2:54 Then my father stepped toward me

2:56 and began striking my face with a thorny branch.

2:59 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was deeply aggrieved by this,

3:04 so he drew near to me and began walking by my side, saying:

3:09 "Be patient,

3:10 for they are only polytheists,

3:13 and the blood of any of them is merely like the blood of a dog."

3:17 He kept bringing his sword closer to my hand,

3:19 hoping that I would take it and strike down my father with it,

3:23 but I did not do so.

3:26 Later on, I escaped a second time from my captivity and fetters,

3:31 and joined Abu Basir, may Allah be pleased with him, and his band along the seashore.

3:37 Together, we formed a company of Muslims,

3:40 never letting a caravan belonging to the Quraysh pass by without seizing it,

3:45 until the Quraysh became desperate because of us.

3:48 So they sent word to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

3:52 pleading with him to summon us to join him,

3:55 and he did so.

3:57 Because of all these circumstances,

3:59 I was unable to participate alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him,

4:03 in any of his military expeditions prior to the Conquest of Mecca.
