0:16 I am one of the Companions from the Muhajirun (Emigrants).

0:23 I embraced Islam in the seventh year after the Hijrah.

0:26 I remained in the company of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, both in his travels and at home.

0:32 I witnessed the Battle of Khaybar and the subsequent military expeditions with him.

0:36 I participated in the wars against the apostates.

0:39 And in the Islamic conquests.

0:42 I was known for my worship and my asceticism regarding worldly life.

0:46 I was a young man in Makkah.

0:50 When the people were called to go out to the area of al-Tan'im, outside the Sacred Precinct (Haram).

0:55 To witness the execution of Khubayb ibn 'Adi, may Allah be pleased with him.

1:00 After they had captured him through treachery.

1:02 I was deeply affected by that incident.

1:05 What I heard and witnessed of Khubayb’s love for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, took root in my heart.

1:13 As did the depth of his faith in the religion of Islam.

1:17 That was the cause of my conversion to Islam.

1:20 Later, the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, appointed me as governor of Homs.

1:26 I went there while I was averse to the position of leadership.

1:30 Then, he asked its people about my conduct among them.

1:34 The people of Homs spoke well of me.

1:37 However, they complained to him about four matters regarding me.

1:41 So 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, summoned me.

1:44 He said to them, "Bring forth what you have against your governor."

1:49 They said, "He does not come out to us until the day is well advanced."

1:55 'Umar asked me about that.

1:58 I said, "By Allah, I truly hated to mention this."

2:03 "But it is because my family has no servant."

2:07 "So I knead my dough and leave it until it ferments."

2:12 "Then I bake my bread, perform wudu for the Duha prayer,"

2:16 "And then I go out to the people."

2:19 'Umar said, "And what else do you complain about?"

2:23 They said, "He does not respond to us at night."

2:27 I replied, "I have dedicated the day to them and the night to my Lord."

2:33 'Umar said, "And what else?"

2:36 They said, "He does not come out to us one day every month."

2:41 I said, "I have no servant to wash my garment."

2:46 "And I have no clothes other than what I am wearing."

2:49 "So I wash my garment and wait for it to dry."

2:54 "And at the end of the day, I go out to them."

2:59 'Umar said, "And what else do you complain about?"

3:03 They said, "He is seized from time to time by a fainting spell."

3:08 "Where he becomes absent from those in his gathering."

3:11 I said, "I witnessed the execution of Khubayb, may Allah be pleased with him, in Makkah."

3:17 "I was among the polytheists at that time."

3:21 "The Quraysh crucified him on a piece of wood."

3:24 "And they proceeded to cut his body piece by piece until he died."

3:30 "Every time I remember that scene I witnessed,"

3:34 "And I recall my failure to help Khubayb,"

3:37 "I tremble in fear of Allah the Almighty."

3:41 "And I am overcome by what overcomes me."

3:44 'Umar said, "Praise be to Allah, who did not prove my opinion of you wrong."

3:51 After some time, a delegation from the people of Homs came to the Caliph in Madinah.

3:57 'Umar said to them,

3:59 "Write down for me the names of your poor."

4:02 They wrote him a list containing the names of the poor.

4:07 And they included my name in it.

4:09 'Umar asked, "Who is this?"

4:12 They said, "This is our governor."

4:15 He said, "Your governor is poor?"

4:19 They said, "Yes."

4:21 'Umar was astonished and said,

4:23 "How can your governor be poor?"

4:26 "Where is his stipend?"

4:28 "Where is his provision?"

4:30 They said, "O Commander of the Faithful,"

4:33 "He does not keep anything for himself."

4:35 "He spends all of his stipend on us."

4:39 'Umar wept.

4:41 Then he took a thousand dinars.

4:43 He tied them in a purse and sent them to me.

4:46 And he said,

4:48 "Give him my greetings."

4:50 "And tell him,"

4:52 "The Commander of the Faithful has sent you this money."

4:56 "Use it to meet your needs."

4:59 The messenger brought it to me.

5:01 I looked at the dinars.

5:03 And I began to say, "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return."

5:06 In the morning,

5:08 I spent it all in the cause of Allah.
