0:16 I am one of the Companions, among the foremost of the Emigrants from the people of Makkah.

0:24 I was blind, and I served as a mu'adhdhin for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

0:30 I used to teach the people the Qur'an in Madinah alongside Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him.

0:36 This was before the Prophet, peace be upon him, migrated there.

0:40 The Prophet, peace be upon him, held me in high esteem.

0:44 He would appoint me as his deputy over Madinah whenever he traveled.

0:48 I would lead the remaining Companions there in prayer.

0:52 Once, while in Makkah,

0:56 The Prophet, peace be upon him, was sitting with some of the leaders of Quraysh,

1:02 Hoping they would embrace Islam.

1:05 I came to ask him about a matter of religion,

1:08 But he turned away from me and focused on them.

1:11 Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed verses rebuking the Prophet, peace be upon him:

1:17 "He frowned and turned away, because the blind man came to him."

1:22 I used to call the adhan for prayer during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

1:27 And Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, would also call the adhan.

1:30 Bilal’s adhan was before dawn,

1:33 So that those sleeping would wake up and those fasting would take their suhur.

1:37 When I called the adhan, the people would refrain from eating and prepare for prayer.

1:42 I lived with a Jewish woman in Madinah,

1:47 Who was kind to me and cared for me.

1:50 However, she used to insult the Prophet, peace be upon him, and speak ill of him.

1:56 So I struck her and killed her.

1:59 This matter was brought to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

2:03 And he summoned me, so I said,

2:06 "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, she was kind to me,

2:11 But she harmed me regarding Allah and His Messenger."

2:15 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

2:18 "May Allah distance her; she has forfeited her own blood."

2:22 When the words of Allah, the Exalted, were revealed:

2:27 "Not equal are those believers who sit [at home] and those who strive,"

2:31 "In the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives,"

2:35 I said, "O Lord, reveal my excuse."

2:39 So Allah, the Exalted, revealed:

2:41 “Those of the believers who sit still, other than those who have a (disabling) hurt, are not on an equality with those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives. Allah hath conferred on those who strive with their wealth and lives a rank above the sedentary. Unto each Allah hath promised good, but He hath bestowed on those who strive a great reward above the sedentary;” (4:95)

2:46 "Except those who strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives."

2:51 After that, I would strive to go out with the people for military expeditions,

2:56 And I would say to them, "Hand the banner to me,

3:00 For I am blind and cannot flee,

3:03 So place me between the two ranks."

3:06 They would do so for me every time,

3:10 Until I fell as a martyr in the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah.
