0:18 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

0:24 “And if they had wished to go forth they would assuredly have made ready some equipment, but Allah was averse to their being sent forth and held them back and it was said (unto them): Sit ye with the sedentary!” (9:46)

0:30 But Allah disliked their mobilization.

0:39 So He held them back, and it was said, "Stay behind with those who stay."

0:48 Had these people—O Muhammad—intended to go out with you,

0:52 they would have made preparations for the departure.

0:54 They would have readied themselves for the journey and the enemy with the necessary equipment.

0:58 But Allah disliked their going out,

1:01 so He made the departure burdensome for them.

1:03 Until they found it easy to remain in their homes,

1:06 and found the journey with you burdensome.

1:08 And it was said, "Stay behind with the sick and the weak,"

1:12 “Not unto the weak nor unto the sick nor unto those who can find naught to spend is any fault (to be imputed though they stay at home) if they are true to Allah and His messenger. Not unto the good is there any road (of blame). Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (9:91)

1:15 and with the women and the children.

1:19 “Had they gone forth among you they had added to you naught save trouble and had hurried to and fro among you, seeking to cause sedition among you; and among you there are some who would have listened to them. Allah is Aware of evil-doers.” (9:47)

1:25 And they would have scurried about in your midst,

1:30 seeking to sow discord among you.

1:32 And among you are those who listen to them.

1:36 And Allah is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.

1:43 Had they gone out among you, O believers,

1:46 these hypocrites who are among you,

1:49 they would have added nothing but corruption and harm.

1:52 And they would have hurried to stir up trouble among you,

1:56 seeking to find ways to cause you tribulation,

1:58 regarding your departure on your military campaign.

2:01 And among you are those who listen—they hear your hadith,

2:04 then they convey it to them and report it to them.

2:08 They are spies among you, though they are not hypocrites.

2:12 And Allah is All-Knowing of those who direct their actions toward ends other than those intended.

2:17 Some seek permission from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, for a valid excuse,

2:22 while others seek permission out of doubt in Islam,

2:25 and others listen to the hadith of the believers to report it to the hypocrites.

2:30 Nothing of the secrets of His creation or their intentions is hidden from Him.

2:36 “Aforetime they sought to cause sedition and raised difficulties for thee till the Truth came and the decree of Allah was made manifest, though they were loth.” (9:48)

2:55 These hypocrites have indeed sought to cause tribulation for your companions, O Muhammad.

3:01 They sought to turn them away from their religion before this,

3:05 like the action of 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy on the day of Uhud.

3:08 And they schemed against you and against the invalidation of the religion by discouraging people from following you,

3:13 and by denying what you brought to them,

3:16 until the victory of Allah came,

3:18 and the religion of Allah, which He commanded, prevailed,

3:21 while the hypocrites were averse.

3:32 “Of them is he who saith: Grant me leave (to stay at home) and tempt me not. Surely it is into temptation that they (thus) have fallen. Lo! hell verily is all around the disbelievers.” (9:49)

3:36 And indeed, Hell encompasses the disbelievers.

3:45 And among the hypocrites is he who says, "Give me permission and do not put me to the test,"

3:48 "I will not go out with you,"

3:50 "and do not tempt me with the sight of the women of the Byzantines and their daughters,"

3:55 "for I am infatuated with women."

3:58 Surely, he has already fallen into tribulation by staying behind from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

4:05 And the desire of his own self over his own soul is even greater.

4:09 And indeed, the Fire encompasses those who disbelieved in Allah, rejected His signs, and denied His Messenger,

4:15 surrounding them,

4:17 gathering them all together on the Day of Resurrection.

4:28 And if a misfortune befalls you, they say, "We had taken our precautions beforehand," and they turn away, rejoicing.

4:43 O Muhammad,

4:45 if a joy befalls you—by Allah granting you victory over the lands of the Romans in this campaign of yours—

4:50 it distresses the hypocrites.

4:52 And if a misfortune befalls you, through the defeat of your army therein,

4:56 they say, "We had taken our precautions by staying behind from Muhammad before this misfortune befell him,"

5:05 and they turn away from Muhammad, rejoicing at the misfortune that has befallen Muhammad and his companions,

5:11 through the defeat of his companions, their retreat from him, and the killing of those who were killed among them.

5:18 “Say: Naught befalleth us save that which Allah hath decreed for us. He is our Protecting Friend. In Allah let believers put their trust!” (9:51)

5:26 And upon Allah let the believers rely.

5:33 Say, O Muhammad, to these hypocrites,

5:37 "Nothing will befall us, O you who are doubtful in your religion, except what Allah has decreed for us in the Preserved Tablet."

5:44 He is our Protector against His enemies.

5:47 And upon Allah let the believers rely, that He may suffice them in their affairs,

5:52 and grant them victory over those who oppress them and plot against them.

5:56 Say, "Do you await for us anything except one of the two best outcomes?"

6:03 “Say: Can ye await for us aught save one of two good things (death or victory in Allah's way)? while we await for you that Allah will afflict you with a doom from Him or at our hands. Await then! Lo! We are awaiting with you.” (9:52)

6:11 “Say: Can ye await for us aught save one of two good things (death or victory in Allah's way)? while we await for you that Allah will afflict you with a doom from Him or at our hands. Await then! Lo! We are awaiting with you.” (9:52)

6:20 “Say: Can ye await for us aught save one of two good things (death or victory in Allah's way)? while we await for you that Allah will afflict you with a doom from Him or at our hands. Await then! Lo! We are awaiting with you.” (9:52)

6:29 Say, O Muhammad, to these hypocrites,

6:32 "Do you await for us anything except one of the two states,"

6:36 which are both better than any other,

6:39 "either victory over the enemy and a conquest for us by our defeating them,"

6:44 "or martyrdom at the hands of our enemy, in which there is martyrdom and success in Paradise?"

6:50 "And we await for you that Allah will afflict you with a punishment from Him, immediate and destructive,"

6:57 "or a punishment at our hands, so we will kill you."

7:00 "So wait; we are with you, waiting for what Allah will do with us,"

7:05 "and to what end the affair of each group, ours and yours, will lead."

7:21 “Say: Pay (your contribution), willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Lo! ye were ever froward folk.” (9:53)

7:33 Say, O Muhammad, to these hypocrites,

7:36 "Spend your wealth however you wish on this journey of yours or otherwise,"

7:41 "and in whatever state you wish,"

7:44 "for Allah will never accept your expenditures,"

7:47 "while you are in doubt about your religion."

7:50 "Indeed, you were a people who have strayed from faith in your Lord."

7:56 “And naught preventeth that their contributions should be accepted from them save that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His messenger, and they come not to worship save as idlers, and pay not (their contribution) save reluctantly.” (9:54)

8:26 And what prevented these hypocrites, O Muhammad, from having their expenditures accepted,

8:32 “And naught preventeth that their contributions should be accepted from them save that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His messenger, and they come not to worship save as idlers, and pay not (their contribution) save reluctantly.” (9:54)

8:36 and they do not come to prayer except while they are lazy,

8:40 because they do not hope for reward for performing it, nor do they fear punishment for abandoning it.

8:46 And they do not spend anything from their wealth,

8:50 except while they are unwilling, for they dislike spending it on what strengthens Islam and its people.

8:57 “So let not their riches nor their children please thee (O Muhammad). Allah thereby intendeth but to punish them in the life of the world and that their souls shall pass away while they are disbelievers.” (9:55)

9:16 Because of the obligations He has imposed upon them therein.

9:19 And their souls depart, and they die in their disbelief in Allah,

9:25 and their denial of the prophethood of the Prophet of Allah, Muhammad, peace be upon him.

9:31 And their wealth and their children will burn them.

9:35 And their souls will perish while they are disbelievers.

9:40 So let not the wealth of these hypocrites or their children amaze you, O Muhammad.

9:45 And they swear by Allah that they are indeed of you, while they are not of you; but they are a people who are afraid.

10:03 And they swear by Allah to you, O believers—the hypocrites, falsely and deceitfully—that they are indeed of you in religion and creed, while they are not of your religion or creed; but they are a people who fear you.

10:20 “Had they but found a refuge, or caverns, or a place to enter, they surely had resorted thither swift as runaways.” (9:57)

10:53 “And of them is he who defameth thee in the matter of the alms. If they are given thereof they are content, and if they are not given thereof, behold! they are enraged.” (9:58)

11:24 If you give them from it what pleases them, they are pleased with you; but if you do not give them from it, they are displeased with you and criticize you.

11:55 And if only those who criticize you, O Muhammad, regarding the charities,

12:01 were satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them from the gifts,

12:05 and said, "Allah is sufficient for us,"

12:07 "Allah will give us from the bounty of His treasuries,"

12:10 "and His Messenger from the charity and otherwise,"

12:13 "we desire of Allah that He expand for us from His bounty,"

12:18 "and enrich us, making us independent of charity and the prayers of people and the need for them."
