The Summary of Tafsir al-Tabari,
0:08
Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammari.
0:13
Surah al-Baqarah.
0:17
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
0:22
“Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. And if Allah had so wiled it, those who followed after them would not have fought one with another after the clear proofs had come unto them. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will.” (2:253)
0:28
“Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will.” (2:253)
0:33
And some of them He raised in degrees.
0:37
And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs
0:41
and supported him with the Pure Spirit.
0:44
If Allah had willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another
0:51
after there had come to them—
0:55
after clear proofs had come to them;
1:00
but they differed,
1:04
and among them were some who believed and some who disbelieved.
1:10
And if Allah had willed, they would not have fought one another.
1:15
“Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will.” (2:253)
1:21
Those Messengers whose stories Allah has recounted in this surah—
1:26
He favored some of them over others:
1:29
to some He spoke directly,
1:30
among them Moses, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him;
1:33
and some of them He raised degrees above others
1:37
in nobility and elevated status.
1:39
And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear arguments and proofs of his prophethood,
1:44
such as curing the blind and the leper and reviving the dead;
1:48
and We strengthened and aided him through Gabriel.
1:51
If Allah had willed, those who came after the Messengers—
1:56
whom He had favored over one another—would not have fought one another
1:59
after there had come to them of Allah's signs what made the truth evident to them
2:03
and clearly illuminated the path.
2:06
Yet these people differed,
2:08
since Allah did not decree for them that they refrain from fighting,
2:12
“Mankind were one community, and Allah sent (unto them) prophets as bearers of good tidings and as warners, and revealed therewith the Scripture with the truth that it might judge between mankind concerning that wherein they differed. And only those unto whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it, after clear proofs had come unto them, through hatred one of another. And Allah by His Will guided those who believe unto the truth of that concerning which they differed. Allah guideth whom He will unto a straight path.” (2:213)
2:16
by forbidding mutual combat and division;
2:19
even after the proof had been established against them
2:22
regarding the oneness of Allah, the mission of His Messengers, and the revelation of His Book.
2:27
So some of them disbelieved in Allah and in His signs,
2:30
while others believed in them.
2:33
And had Allah willed to restrain them through His divine protection and guidance away from disobeying Him,
2:39
so that they would not fight,
2:41
they would not have fought, nor would they have differed.
2:43
But Allah guides whom He wills to His obedience and to faith in Him,
2:48
and He forsakes whom He wills, so that he disbelieves in Him and disobeys Him.
2:52
“O ye who believe! spend of that wherewith We have provided you ere a day come when there will be no trafficking, nor friendship, nor intercession. The disbelievers, they are the wrong-doers.” (2:254)
2:59
Before there comes a Day
3:04
before there comes a Day wherein there is no trade,
3:10
“O ye who believe! spend of that wherewith We have provided you ere a day come when there will be no trafficking, nor friendship, nor intercession. The disbelievers, they are the wrong-doers.” (2:254)
3:14
and the disbelievers—they are the wrongdoers.
3:20
O you who have believed, spend in the cause of Allah from that which We have provided you of your wealth,
3:26
and give in charity from it,
3:28
and discharge from it the obligatory rights We have enjoined upon you,
3:32
before the coming of a Day on which you will not be able to purchase what you once could through spending in this world.
3:41
And a Day wherein no friendship will be of benefit as it was in the worldly life,
3:47
nor will any intercessor intercede on their behalf with Allah as was the case for them in the world.
3:53
The phrasing of this verse regarding intercession is general, yet what is meant by it is specific,
3:58
because the close allies of Allah and the believers will indeed intercede for one another.
4:04
As for those who deny Allah, rejecting Him and His Messengers,
4:08
they are the ones who place their denial where it does not belong,
4:11
who do what they have no right to do,
4:14
and who utter what they have no right to utter.
4:18
Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.
4:24
“Allah! There is no deity save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.” (2:255)
4:30
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
4:35
4:41
He knows what is before them and what will be after them.
4:46
4:54
4:58
And their preservation tires Him not,
5:02
and He is the Most High, the Most Great.
5:07
Allah, besides Whom there is none worthy of worship,
5:10
to Whom belongs everlasting life
5:13
and an eternal existence that has no beginning marked by a limit,
5:16
nor an end bounded by a span of time;
5:19
the Sustainer and Caretaker of all that is besides Him,
5:21
through providing sustenance, protection, and governance,
5:24
and transitioning states from one condition to another.
5:27
Drowsiness does not overtake Him so that He would slumber,
5:30
nor sleep so that He would be overcome by deep rest;
5:33
for if He were to sleep, He would be subdued and overwhelmed,
5:37
since sleep overcomes and overpowers the sleeper.
5:40
And were He to become drowsy,
5:42
the heavens and the earth and everything within them would collapse,
5:46
because the upholding of all of that is through His governance and His power,
5:51
whereas sleep distracts the governor from governing,
5:54
and drowsiness prevents the decree-maker from determining affairs due to slumber.
5:59
The Sovereign of all that exists, without partner or peer.
6:03
Who is it that could intercede for His servants,
6:06
if He intends to punish them,
6:08
unless He grants him permission to intercede for them?
6:12
The One Who encompasses all that has been
6:14
and all that will ever be in His knowledge;
6:17
nothing of it is hidden from Him.
6:20
The All-Knowing from Whom nothing is concealed,
6:23
encompassing all of it,
6:25
comprehending it exclusively, above all else besides Him.
6:29
And none besides Him knows anything,
6:31
except what He wills to teach and make known.
6:34
His knowledge encompasses the heavens and the earth;
6:38
and it is said that the Kursi is the Throne itself,
6:41
upon which He sits,
6:43
and that it groans like the creaking of a new saddle when mounted due to its heavy load;
6:49
and this is the foremost interpretation of the verse.
6:52
And the preservation of the heavens and the earth does not burden Him, nor does it weigh heavily upon Him.
6:57
The Possessor of loftiness and exaltation above His creation through His omnipotence;
7:01
the Possessor of greatness beside which everything else is diminished,
7:05
so there is nothing greater than Him.
7:08
“There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (2:256)
7:11
Right guidance has become distinct from error.
7:15
“There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (2:256)
7:20
he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold.
7:29
No one is to be compelled to enter the religion of Islam from among the People of the Two Books or the Zoroastrians,
7:36
nor anyone whose affirmation upon his religion—which opposes the true religion—has been accepted,
7:41
and from whom the jizyah is taken.
7:43
Truth has become clear and distinct from falsehood,
7:46
and the objective has become manifest to the seeker of truth and right guidance.
7:50
So whoever swerves away from right guidance after it has become manifest,
7:54
so whoever swerves away from right guidance after it has become manifest,
7:57
so whoever swerves away from right guidance after it has been made clear to him,
8:01
then his affair rests with his Lord,
8:03
and He is the Master of his punishment in the Hereafter.
8:06
Thus whoever denies the divinity of every object of worship besides Allah,
8:10
and disbelieves in it,
8:11
and affirms with true faith in Allah that He alone is his God, his Lord, and his sole object of worship,
8:16
has grasped the firmest bond that can ever be held
8:19
by one seeking salvation for himself from Allah's torment and punishment;
8:24
like one holding fast to the sturdiest of secure handholds,
8:27
the breaking of whose bonds is never feared.
8:30
And Allah is All-Hearing of the believer's faith in Allah alone
8:34
when rejecting false deities and professing Allah's oneness;
8:39
All-Knowing of what his heart resolves upon regarding Allah's oneness
8:42
and sincerely devoting Lordship to Him alone,
8:45
and of what his conscience harbors regarding renunciation of false gods, idols, and tyrants.
8:52
“Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein.” (2:257)
9:01
“Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein.” (2:257)
9:12
Those are the companions of the Fire;
9:18
they will abide eternally therein.
9:23
Allah is the Ally and Helper of those who believe;
9:27
He takes charge of them through His aid and divine guidance,
9:30
bringing them out from the darknesses of disbelief into the light of faith.
9:35
As for those who deny His oneness,
9:38
their supporters and allies are the false rivals and idols that they worship besides Allah;
9:44
they bring them out from faith into the darknesses and doubts of disbelief,
9:49
which obstruct them from seeing the radiance of faith and its veritable proofs and paths.
9:55
Those who disbelieve are the companions of the Fire, abiding eternally therein.
10:01
“Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom; how, when Abraham said: My Lord is He Who giveth life and causeth death, he answered: I give life and cause death. Abraham said: Lo! Allah causeth the sun to rise in the East, so do thou cause it to come up from the West. Thus was the disbeliever abashed. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.” (2:258)
10:15
“Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom; how, when Abraham said: My Lord is He Who giveth life and causeth death, he answered: I give life and cause death. Abraham said: Lo! Allah causeth the sun to rise in the East, so do thou cause it to come up from the West. Thus was the disbeliever abashed. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.” (2:258)
10:26
“Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom; how, when Abraham said: My Lord is He Who giveth life and causeth death, he answered: I give life and cause death. Abraham said: Lo! Allah causeth the sun to rise in the East, so do thou cause it to come up from the West. Thus was the disbeliever abashed. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.” (2:258)
10:29
“Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom; how, when Abraham said: My Lord is He Who giveth life and causeth death, he answered: I give life and cause death. Abraham said: Lo! Allah causeth the sun to rise in the East, so do thou cause it to come up from the West. Thus was the disbeliever abashed. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.” (2:258)
10:41
So the disbeliever was dumbfounded,
10:43
and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
10:49
Have you not considered with your heart, O Muhammad, the one who disputed with the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, regarding his Lord,
10:57
simply because Allah had given him kingship, when Abraham said to him: "My Lord is the One in Whose hand is life and death;
11:06
He gives life to whom He wills and causes to die whom He pleases"?
11:10
He said: "I can do that: I spare the life of whomever I wish to kill, so I do not execute him,
11:17
and that act of mine counts as giving him life; and I execute another, so that act of mine counts as causing his death."
11:25
Abraham, peace be upon him, said:
11:29
"Indeed, Allah—Who is my Lord—brings the sun from the east,
11:34
so bring it from the west, if you are truthful in claiming that you are a god!"
11:40
Thereupon he was silenced, and his argument was shattered.
11:43
And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people to any argument by which they could refute the argument of the people of truth
11:49
when debating and disputing,
11:52
because the arguments of the people of falsehood are utterly baseless.
11:56
“Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And Allah made him die a hundred years, then brought him back to life. He said: How long hast thou tarried? (The man) said: I have tarried a day or part of a day. (He) said: Nay, but thou hast tarried for a hundred years. Just look at thy food and drink which have not rotted! Look at thine ass! And, that We may make thee a token unto mankind, look at the bones, how We adjust them and then cover them with flesh! And when (the matter) became clear unto him, he said: I know now that Allah is Able to do all things.” (2:259)
12:06
He said, "How will Allah ever bring this to life after its death?"
12:12
“Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And when (the matter) became clear unto him, he said: I know now that Allah is Able to do all things.” (2:259)
12:18
He said, "How long have you remained?"
12:20
“Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And Allah made him die a hundred years, then brought him back to life. He said: How long hast thou tarried? (The man) said: I have tarried a day or part of a day. 12:35
And look at your donkey; and We will make you a sign for the people.
12:42
“Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And when (the matter) became clear unto him, he said: I know now that Allah is Able to do all things.” (2:259)
13:01
Have you considered, O Muhammad,
13:04
the one who said, upon seeing a town entirely desolate of its inhabitants and dwellers:
13:09
"How will Allah ever bring this to life after its death?"
13:13
despite his knowledge that He originated its creation from nothing?
13:17
So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then resurrected him to life after his death.
13:24
Allah said to him: "How long a period of time have you remained dead
13:28
before I resurrected you alive from your death?"
13:32
The one resurrected after his death said:
13:35
"I have remained dead for a single day, or part of a day."
13:39
“Or (bethink thee of) the like of him who, passing by a township which had fallen into utter ruin, exclaimed: How shall Allah give this township life after its death? And Allah made him die a hundred years, then brought him back to life. He said: How long hast thou tarried? (The man) said: I have tarried a day or part of a day. And when (the matter) became clear unto him, he said: I know now that Allah is Able to do all things.” (2:259)
13:43
"So look at your food and your drink: the years that have passed over them have not changed them!
13:49
And look at the bones that you can see with your own eyes!"
13:52
13:56
His donkey had already decayed into dust,
13:59
so he was commanded to look at everything his gaze could reach that decay had affected,
14:05
because Allah, exalted be His mention, made all of that a decisive proof against him,
14:10
and a lesson and an admonition for him.
14:13
We caused you to die for a hundred years, then We resurrected you,
14:16
in order to make you a proof against whoever is ignorant of My power and doubts My majesty,
14:22
and that I am capable of doing whatever I will.
14:26
Thus it became a proof against those who knew him among his children and his people who knew of his death
14:32
and that Allah had restored him to life after his death,
14:36
and against those to whom he was sent among them.
14:39
"And look at your own bones and the bones of your donkey,
14:42
how We raise them up from their places on the earth,
14:45
then restore them to their proper places within the body,
14:49
and bring them to life, and then clothe and cover them with flesh!"
14:53
So when what he had previously doubted of Allah's power and majesty became plainly evident before his eyes,
14:59
he said: "I know now, after direct witnessing, clarification, and proof,
15:05
that Allah is over all things competent."
15:10
“And when Abraham said (unto his Lord): My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead, He said: Dost thou not believe? Abraham said: Yea, but (I ask) in order that my heart may be at ease. (His Lord) said: Take four of the birds and cause them to incline unto thee, then place a part of them on each hill, then call them, they will come to thee in haste, and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:260)
15:16
He said, "Have you not believed?"
15:18
“And when Abraham said (unto his Lord): My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead, He said: Dost thou not believe? Abraham said: Yea, but (I ask) in order that my heart may be at ease. (His Lord) said: Take four of the birds and cause them to incline unto thee, then place a part of them on each hill, then call them, they will come to thee in haste, and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:260)
15:24
“And when Abraham said (unto his Lord): My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead, He said: Dost thou not believe? Abraham said: Yea, but (I ask) in order that my heart may be at ease. (His Lord) said: Take four of the birds and cause them to incline unto thee, then place a part of them on each hill, then call them, they will come to thee in haste, and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:260)
15:34
then put a part of them on each mountain;
15:47
then call them, and they will come to you in haste.
15:55
“And when Abraham said (unto his Lord): My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead, He said: Dost thou not believe? Abraham said: Yea, but (I ask) in order that my heart may be at ease. (His Lord) said: Take four of the birds and cause them to incline unto thee, then place a part of them on each hill, then call them, they will come to thee in haste, and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:260)
16:01
Have you not considered when the Prophet of Allah, Abraham—
16:05
a fleeting misgiving from Satan crossed his heart,
16:08
so Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead"?
16:13
His Lord said, "Have you not believed, O Abraham?"
16:16
meaning: that I am fully capable of that?
16:18
He said, "Yes, my Lord!
16:20
But I have asked You to show me that
16:23
so that my heart may be strengthened in faith,
16:25
and Satan will no longer be able to cast doubts into my heart."
16:29
Allah said to him:
16:31
“And when Abraham said (unto his Lord): My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead, He said: Dost thou not believe? Abraham said: Yea, but (I ask) in order that my heart may be at ease. (His Lord) said: Take four of the birds and cause them to incline unto thee, then place a part of them on each hill, then call them, they will come to thee in haste, and know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:260)
16:33
Gather them close to yourself,
16:35
turn them toward you,
16:37
and cut them into pieces;
16:39
then place upon every mountain accessible to you
16:43
portions of those birds.
16:45
Then summon them while they are torn into pieces atop the mountain peaks, lifeless;
16:51
they will come flying swiftly to you.
16:53
And know, O Abraham,
16:55
that the One Who revived these birds after you tore them to pieces
17:01
and restored them to their original form
17:03
Almighty in His retribution
17:05
when He seizes those who disobey His command and rebel against His messengers,
17:09
and Wise in His decree,
17:11
so that He might show Abraham His power to reassemble their parts though they were scattered.
17:17
“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in Allah's way is as the likeness of a grain which groweth seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. Allah giveth increase manifold to whom He will. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing.” (2:261)
17:28
"is like a grain that sprouts,"
17:30
“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in Allah's way is as the likeness of a grain which groweth seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. Allah giveth increase manifold to whom He will. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing.” (2:261)
17:37
"And Allah multiplies the reward for whomever He wills,"
17:42
"and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."
17:45
The example of those who spend their wealth fighting the enemies of Allah
17:51
is like a single grain of wheat or barley.
17:56
“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in Allah's way is as the likeness of a grain which groweth seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. Allah giveth increase manifold to whom He will. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing.” (2:261)
18:01
In the same way, the one who spends his wealth in the cause of Allah
18:05
receives a seven-hundredfold reward.
18:08
Furthermore, Allah multiplies beyond those seven hundred to whatever extent He wills,
18:13
for whichever of those who spend in His cause He pleases.
18:16
For Allah is All-Encompassing, able to grant an even greater increase to whichever of His spending servants He wills,
18:22
far beyond seven hundredfold,
18:25
and All-Knowing of who among them truly deserves such an increase.
18:29
“Those who spend their wealth for the cause of Allah and afterward make not reproach and injury to follow that which they have spent; their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them, neither shall they grieve.” (2:262)
18:38
“Those who spend their wealth for the cause of Allah and afterward make not reproach and injury to follow that which they have spent; their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them, neither shall they grieve.” (2:262)
18:48
"they will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve."
18:56
Those who support the fighters striving in the cause of Allah
19:01
by financing them, providing their mounts, and supplying their other needs,
19:06
and then do not follow what they spent with reminders of generosity or injury,
19:12
will have their full reward and recompense for what they spent in the cause of Allah.
19:19
No fear shall fall upon them when they meet Allah and depart from this world,
19:24
nor will they grieve over whatever they have left behind in the worldly life.
