0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

0:14 Surah an-Nur.

0:18 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

0:22 "[This is] a Surah which We have revealed and ordained,

0:27 “(Here is) a surah which We have revealed and enjoined, and wherein We have revealed plain tokens, that haply ye may take heed.” (24:1)

0:33 “(Here is) a surah which We have revealed and enjoined, and wherein We have revealed plain tokens, that haply ye may take heed.” (24:1)

0:37 that you may remember."

0:42 This is a Surah that We have revealed,

0:44 making its prescribed rulings obligatory upon you,

0:48 binding you to them, and clarifying them for you.

0:51 And We have revealed within this Surah clear proofs and signs of the truth,

0:56 evident to whoever reflects and ponders upon them,

1:00 so that you may take heed through these clear verses We have sent down.

1:32 Whoever among men or women commits unlawful sexual intercourse,

1:36 being free and unmarried—never having been sheltered by marriage—

1:40 flog each of them with a hundred stripes.

1:43 And do not let pity for the male or female adulterer withhold you,

1:46 O believers, out of tender mercy from obeying Allah,

1:50 regarding what He has commanded you to implement of the prescribed legal punishment against them,

1:54 if you truly believe in Allah, your Lord,

1:57 and in the Last Day.

1:59 For whoever genuinely believes in that

2:02 will never disobey Allah in His commands and prohibitions.

2:06 And let the flogging of the two unmarried fornicators, as their prescribed punishment, be witnessed

2:10 by a group of believers in Allah and His Messenger.

2:14 “The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers.” (24:3)

2:21 “The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers.” (24:3)

2:27 “The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers.” (24:3)

2:33 The fornicator only engages in intercourse with a fornicatress who does not deem fornication forbidden,

2:38 or an idolatress who considers it lawful;

2:41 and the fornicatress likewise.

2:43 And such unlawful intercourse has been forbidden to the believers in Allah and His Messenger.

2:47 "And those who accuse chaste women,

2:51 “And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers -” (24:4)

2:56 flog them with eighty stripes,

3:01 “And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers -” (24:4)

3:06 and those are the defiantly disobedient."

3:11 Those who revile chaste, free Muslim women,

3:16 falsely accusing them of fornication,

3:18 and then fail to substantiate what they accused them of

3:22 with four upright witnesses

3:24 who testify that they actually saw them committing the act:

3:29 flog those who accused them with eighty stripes.

3:33 “And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers -” (24:4)

3:37 "And those are the ones who have defied the command of Allah,

3:40 departed from obedience to Him, and thus become defiantly disobedient."

3:43 "Except those who repent thereafter and reform,

3:50 for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

3:55 Except those who repent of their crime that they committed

3:59 by falsely accusing chaste women;

4:01 for Allah will conceal their sins through His pardon,

4:05 being merciful to them after repentance by not punishing them for it;

4:09 so accept their testimony and do not designate them as defiantly disobedient.

4:13 "And those who accuse their spouses,

4:18 “As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves; let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, (swearing) by Allah that he is of those who speak the truth;” (24:6)

4:23 “As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves; let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, (swearing) by Allah that he is of those who speak the truth;” (24:6)

4:28 “As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves; let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, (swearing) by Allah that he is of those who speak the truth;” (24:6)

4:33 “As for those who accuse their wives but have no witnesses except themselves; let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, (swearing) by Allah that he is of those who speak the truth;” (24:6)

4:38 that he is of the truthful.

4:42 And the fifth [oath] that the curse of Allah be upon him..."

4:47 “And yet a fifth, invoking the curse of Allah on him if he is of those who lie.” (24:7)

4:50 Those who accuse their wives of indecency,

4:54 charging them with adultery,

4:57 while having no witnesses to testify on their behalf

5:00 to the truth of the indecency they charged them with:

5:03 one of them shall swear four oaths by Allah,

5:07 by stating:

5:09 "I testify by Allah that I am indeed among the truthful

5:12 in accusing my wife of this indecency."

5:15 And in the fifth testimony, he shall say:

5:18 that the curse of Allah is binding upon him,

5:21 and will certainly descend upon him,

5:23 if he is, in what he accused her of

5:25 regarding that indecency, among the liars.

5:28 "And it will avert punishment from her,

5:31 “And it shall avert the punishment from her if she bear witness before Allah four times that the thing he saith is indeed false,” (24:8)

5:35 that he is of the liars."

5:39 “And a fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he speaketh truth.” (24:9)

5:43 “And a fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he speaketh truth.” (24:9)

5:47 The prescribed punishment is averted from her if she swears four oaths by Allah

5:53 that her husband, who accused her

5:55 of the indecency he charged her with,

5:58 is indeed among the liars regarding his accusation of adultery against her.

6:02 And the fifth oath:

6:04 “And a fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he speaketh truth.” (24:9)

6:06 if her husband, in what he accused her of

6:09 regarding adultery, is among the truthful.

6:11 "And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy..."

6:16 “And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you, and that Allah is Clement, Wise, (ye had been undone).” (24:10)

6:21 And were it not for the favor of Allah upon you,

6:24 O people, and His mercy toward you,

6:27 and that He constantly bestows upon His creation

6:29 His gentleness and abundant grace,

6:31 being All-Wise in His governance of them,

6:34 He would have hastened the punishment upon you;

6:36 but He concealed your sins.

6:40 So give thanks for His blessings, and desist

6:42 from engaging in the acts of disobedience He forbade you from.

6:46 "Indeed, those who brought forth the slander

6:50 are a group among you;

6:54 “Lo! they who spread the slander are a gang among you. Deem it not a bad thing for you; nay, it is good for you. Unto every man of them (will be paid) that which he hath earned of the sin; and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be an awful doom.” (24:11)

7:00 for every person among them

7:08 will be a great punishment."

7:13 Indeed, those who brought forth the lie and falsehood

7:16 are a band from among you, O people.

7:19 Do not think that the sin they brought forth

7:22 is bad for you in the sight of Allah and among the people;

7:25 rather, it is good for you.

7:27 That is because Allah makes it

7:30 an expiation for the one who was falsely accused,

7:32 makes manifest their innocence of what they were accused of,

7:35 and grants them a way out from it.

7:38 For every person among those who brought forth the sin

7:41 is the recompense for the sin he committed,

7:44 being held accountable according to what he brought forth.

7:47 And the one who took upon himself the greater part of that sin and slander among them,

7:50 being the one who initiated delving into it—

7:53 and there is no disagreement among the scholars of the Prophetic biography (Seerah)

7:56 that the one who initiated mentioning the slander,

7:59 gathering his people and speaking to them,

8:02 was Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul.

8:06 "Why, when you heard it,

8:09 did not the believing men and believing women think,

8:13 and say,

8:16 'This is an obvious slander'?"

8:19 Why did you not, O people,

8:23 when you heard what the people of the slander said about Aisha,

8:26 think well of the one accused of that

8:29 from among you, and not presume

8:32 that they committed any indecency?

8:35 And why did not the believing men and believing women say:

8:38 "What we heard from these people, with which she was slandered,

8:41 is a lie and a grave sin,

8:44 evident to anyone who reasons and ponders,

8:47 to be a lie, a sin, and a sheer falsehood"?

9:08 Why did this faction not—

9:12 since they brought forth the slander and accused Aisha of falsehood—

9:15 bring four witnesses to testify

9:18 to their claim about her and what they accused her of?

9:21 And since they failed to bring the four witnesses

9:24 to substantiate the truth of what they accused her of,

9:27 then this faction who accused her of that

9:30 “Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they produce not witnesses, they verily are liars in the sight of Allah.” (24:13)

9:33 are the liars regarding the slander they brought forth.

9:42 "There would have touched you for what you took part in,

9:45 a great punishment.

9:48 When you received it with your tongues

9:51 and said with your mouths

9:54 that of which you had no knowledge,

10:04 and considered it a slight matter,

10:07 and considered it a slight matter..."

10:10 “When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great.” (24:15)

10:13 And were it not for the favor of Allah upon you,

10:17 O you who indulged in the matter of Aisha,

10:20 by refraining from hastening your punishment,

10:23 and His mercy upon you,

10:26 in pardoning you in this world and the Hereafter

10:29 by accepting your repentance,

10:32 there would have touched you for what you delved into regarding Aisha's affair

10:35 a tremendous punishment.

10:39 And you said with your mouths

10:42 that of which you had no knowledge regarding the matter

10:45 that you were narrating,

10:47 saying:

10:50 "We heard that Aisha did such and such,"

10:53 without knowing the reality of that,

10:56 nor its authenticity,

10:59 thinking that your utterance

11:02 was a slight, negligible matter,

11:06 whereas by it you were causing hurt to

11:09 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

11:12 and to his lawful wife.

11:28 And why did you not, O you who delved

11:32 into the slander, when you heard it from whoever brought it forth,

11:35 say: "It is not lawful for us to speak of this,

11:38 nor is it proper for us to utter it.

11:41 Exalted are You, O my Lord, in Your glory!

11:44 We declare our innocence before You of what these people brought forth;

11:47 this statement is a monstrous slander!"?

11:50 "Allah admonishes you lest you return

11:54 to the like of it, ever,

11:57 if you should be believers.

12:00 And Allah makes clear

12:03 to you the verses,

12:06 and Allah is Knowing and Wise."

12:09 Allah reminds you

12:13 and forbids you through the verses of His Book,

12:16 so that you never repeat the like of your deed

12:19 which you committed regarding the matter of Aisha,

12:22 if you truly take heed of the admonitions of Allah,

12:25 comply with His command, and desist

12:28 from what He has forbidden you,

12:32 so that the obedient may be distinguished from the disobedient.

12:35 And Allah is All-Knowing of you and your deeds,

12:38 All-Wise in the governance of His creation.

12:41 "Indeed, those who like

12:45 that indecency should spread

12:48 “Lo! those who love that slander should be spread concerning those who believe, theirs will be a painful punishment in the world and the Hereafter. Allah knoweth. Ye know not.” (24:19)

12:51 a painful punishment;

12:54 for them is a painful punishment

12:57 in this world and the Hereafter.

13:00 And Allah knows,

13:03 while you do not know."

13:07 Indeed, those who love for fornication to spread

13:10 among those who believe in Allah and His Messenger,

13:13 and wish for it to become widespread among them,

13:16 will have a painful punishment in this world through the legal penalty,

13:19 and in the Hereafter the torment of Hellfire,

13:22 if they die persisting in that without repenting.

13:25 And Allah knows the falsehood of those who brought it forth

13:28 from their truthfulness,

13:31 whereas you, O people, do not know that.

13:44 And were it not for the favor of Allah upon you,

13:47 O people, and His mercy toward you,

13:50 and that Allah is full of kindness and mercy toward His creation,

13:53 you would surely have perished on account of what you indulged in.
