0:05 The Summary of Tafsir al-Tabari,
0:08 Abridged by Dr. Oqeel Ibn Salim al-Shammari.
0:13 Surah al-Baqarah.
0:17 In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
0:23 “They question thee about strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin, and (some) utility for men; but the sin of them is greater than their usefulness. And they ask thee what they ought to spend. Say: that which is superfluous. Thus Allah maketh plain to you (His) revelations, that haply ye may reflect.” (2:219)
0:27 “They question thee about strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin, and (some) utility for men; but the sin of them is greater than their usefulness. And they ask thee what they ought to spend. Say: that which is superfluous. Thus Allah maketh plain to you (His) revelations, that haply ye may reflect.” (2:219)
0:34 “They question thee about strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin, and (some) utility for men; but the sin of them is greater than their usefulness. And they ask thee what they ought to spend. Say: that which is superfluous. Thus Allah maketh plain to you (His) revelations, that haply ye may reflect.” (2:219)
0:41 "And they ask you what they should spend."
0:46 "Say: The surplus."
0:48 "Thus does Allah make clear to you the signs that you might give thought."
0:56 Your companions ask you, O Muhammad, about wine, drinking it, and gambling.
1:01 Say to them, O Muhammad:
1:04 In wine and gambling lies great sin.
1:07 For the drinker of wine, when intoxicated,
1:09 Loses the awareness of his Lord,
1:11 And that is among the greatest of sins;
1:13 While gambling distracts from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer,
1:17 And causes enmity and hatred to arise among the players on its account.
1:23 Yet in wine there were financial benefits from its sale before it was prohibited,
1:27 As well as the pleasure they derived from drinking it;
1:31 And the benefits of gambling
1:33 Lay in the portions of slaughtered camel meat they would win.
1:36 That was because they used to gamble for the slaughtered camel,
1:40 And when a man triumphed over his fellow, he would slaughter his camel,
1:44 Then divide it into shares according to the number of arrows drawn.
1:48 But the sin involved in wine and gambling
1:50 Is far greater and more harmful to them than any benefit they might derive from both.
1:56 For whenever they became intoxicated, they would assault one another,
2:00 And fight among themselves;
2:02 And whenever they gambled, evil broke out between them,
2:05 Leading them into sinful deeds.
2:09 And your companions ask you, O Muhammad,
2:12 What they should spend of their wealth
2:15 By way of charity.
2:17 So say to them, O Muhammad:
2:19 Spend from it whatever is surplus to a person’s own needs and the provision of his family,
2:25 Over and above what is indispensable to them.
2:28 This is not an obligatory duty made incumbent by Allah as an absolute right upon the wealth,
2:33 But rather a notification from Allah of the spending that pleases Him as opposed to what earns His displeasure.
2:39 Thus, its ruling remains established, neither abrogating nor abrogated.
2:43 In this way have I clarified to you My guiding signs and My proofs,
2:46 Made known to you that which contains your deliverance from My punishment,
2:50 And clearly set forth for you My boundaries and My obligatory duties,
2:54 So that you may reflect upon My promise and My threat, My reward and My punishment,
2:59 And thereby choose obedience, by which you attain My reward in the Hereafter
3:05 And win eternal bliss,
3:07 Rather than preferring fleeting pleasures and trivial desires
3:11 Through embarking upon disobedience to Me in this transient world.
3:25 "And if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers."
3:30 “Upon the world and the Hereafter. And they question thee concerning orphans. Say: To improve their lot is best. And if ye mingle your affairs with theirs, then (they are) your brothers. Allah knoweth him who spoileth from him who improveth. Had Allah willed He could have overburdened you. Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:220)
3:34 “Upon the world and the Hereafter.
3:39 "Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise."
3:45 Your companions ask you, O Muhammad, concerning the property of orphans,
3:50 And pooling their wealth with theirs in spending, food, drink,
3:55 Housing, and domestic service.
3:58 Say to them: Your gracious favor toward them by managing and improving their property,
4:02 Without causing any loss to their wealth,
4:05 Is better for you with Allah and brings you a greater reward,
4:09 And is better for them regarding their wealth in their immediate worldly life,
4:13 Because of how it preserves their assets intact for them.
4:17 But if you mix your affairs with theirs, sharing with them in your expenditures, your food,
4:22 Your drink, and your dwellings,
4:25 Taking from their wealth compensation in return for managing their affairs
4:29 And maintaining their property, they are nevertheless your brothers,
4:33 And brothers naturally assist one another.
4:36 Even though your Lord has permitted you to mix your affairs with the orphans,
4:41 Be mindful of Allah regarding yourselves;
4:44 For He knows well who among you mixes his affairs with an orphan,
4:47 Sharing with him in his food, drink, and dwelling,
4:51 And what his true intention is behind that co-mingling:
4:54 Is it to consume his wealth wrongfully, or to improve and cultivate it?
4:58 For nothing of it is hidden from Him,
5:01 And He knows which of you intends to preserve the wealth and which intends to squander it.
5:06 Had Allah willed, He could have forbidden the co-mingling with your orphans that He made lawful for you,
5:12 Which would have exhausted you and caused you hardship.
5:15 Yet He granted you a concession and made it easy for you out of mercy toward you.
5:21 Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might throughout His dominion;
5:24 Nothing can hinder Him from sending down any punishment upon you
5:28 Had He burdened you with obligations beyond your capacity to fulfill,
5:33 Whereupon you fell short in carrying them out.
5:35 And He is All-Wise in doing so had He afflicted you with it,
5:39 As He is in all other rulings and decrees of His governance;
5:42 No flaw or deficiency ever touches His deeds.
6:09 A believer is better than an idolater, even if he pleases you.
6:16 “Wed not idolatresses till they believe; for lo! a believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress though she please you; and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe, for lo! a believing slave is better than an idolater though he please you. These invite unto the Fire, and Allah inviteth unto the Garden, and unto forgiveness by His grace, and expoundeth His revelations to mankind that haply they may remember.” (2:221)
6:22 “Wed not idolatresses till they believe; for lo! a believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress though she please you; and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe, for lo! a believing slave is better than an idolater though he please you. These invite unto the Fire, and Allah inviteth unto the Garden, and unto forgiveness by His grace, and expoundeth His revelations to mankind that haply they may remember.” (2:221)
6:28 “Wed not idolatresses till they believe; for lo! a believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress though she please you; and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe, for lo! a believing slave is better than an idolater though he please you. These invite unto the Fire, and Allah inviteth unto the Garden, and unto forgiveness by His grace, and expoundeth His revelations to mankind that haply they may remember.” (2:221)
6:36 Do not marry idolatrous women who are not from the People of the Book, O believers, until they believe,
6:43 Accepting faith in Allah, His Messenger, and what was revealed to him.
6:47 For a believing bondwoman who has faith in Allah and His Messenger
6:50 Is better in the sight of Allah and more virtuous than a free idolatrous woman who disbelieves,
6:55 Even if the idolatrous woman pleases you in beauty, lineage, or wealth.
6:59 So do not seek marriage among noblewomen from among the polytheists,
7:04 For Muslim bondwomen are better to marry in the sight of Allah than they are.
7:10 Allah has likewise forbidden believing women from marrying polytheistic men,
7:14 So do not give them in marriage to them, O believers;
7:18 For that is strictly unlawful for you.
7:20 Giving them in marriage to a believing slave who accepts Allah and His Messenger
7:26 Is better for you than giving them in marriage to a free polytheist,
7:31 Even if his nobility and lineage impress you.
7:34 For those whose marriage has been forbidden to you, O believers,
7:38 Whether polytheistic men or polytheistic women,
7:42 Call you to deeds that lead you into the Fire,
7:46 Whereas Allah calls you to deeds that admit you into Paradise
7:50 And to that which wipes away your misdeeds,
7:53 By making known to you His path and His way that leads to Paradise and forgiveness.
7:59 And He makes clear His proofs and signs in His Book revealed through His Messenger,
8:05 That they may take heed and learn the lesson.
8:29 Your companions ask you, O Muhammad, about menstruation.
8:35 Say: It is an impurity, due to its foul smell, uncleanness, and filth;
8:40 So refrain from sexual intercourse with women,
8:45 And avoid intimate contact with them,
8:48 And avoid intimate contact with them,
8:51 And avoid intimate contact with them,
8:54 And avoid intimate contact with them;
8:57 Refrain from sexual intercourse with women during their menstruation,
9:01 And do not approach them intimately until they have washed themselves,
9:05 Becoming pure from their menses after the bleeding has ceased.
9:08 Then, when they have performed ghusl and purified themselves with water,
9:11 Have intercourse with them,
9:13 Approaching them in the vagina from the manner that Allah has permitted you to approach them,
9:18 Which is during their state of purity and post-cleansing,
9:22 Not during their state of menstruation.
9:24 Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly turn back to Him from sins,
9:27 And He loves those who purify themselves with water for prayer.
9:31 "Your women are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth however you will,"
9:40 "And put forth good for yourselves,"
9:44 "And fear Allah, and know that you will meet Him,"
9:51 "And give glad tidings to the believers,"
10:21 In My messengers and in meeting Me,
10:23 Confirming their faith in word through their righteous deeds.
10:27 “And make not Allah, by your oaths, a hindrance to your being righteous and observing your duty unto Him and making peace among mankind. Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (2:224)
10:32 “And make not Allah, by your oaths, a hindrance to your being righteous and observing your duty unto Him and making peace among mankind. Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (2:224)
10:43 "And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
10:47 Do not make swearing by Allah an excuse to abstain from doing good,
10:53 Or from fearing your Lord, being cautious of Him and His punishment regarding His obligations,
10:58 And His boundaries lest you neglect or transgress them,
11:02 Or from reconciling between people in righteousness wherein there is no sin,
11:07 And in that which Allah loves rather than what He detests.
11:11 For Allah is All-Hearing of what the swearer among you says when taking an oath,
11:15 Claiming: "By Allah, I will not be dutiful, nor fear Allah, nor reconcile between people!"
11:21 He is All-Knowing of what you intend and seek by taking such an oath,
11:26 For I am the Knower of the unseen and of what the breasts conceal.
11:30 "Allah will not call you to account for what is unintentional in your oaths,"
11:37 “Allah will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths. But He will take you to task for that which your hearts have garnered. Allah is Forgiving, Clement.” (2:225)
11:43 "And Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing."
11:47 Allah will not hold you accountable for unintended slips of your tongues in your oaths,
11:52 Pronounced as careless or improper oaths without deliberate intent to commit a sin;
11:58 Rather, He only holds you accountable for what you bind deliberately with sworn intent.
12:04 In that case, it entails either an immediate expiation in this life,
12:08 Or a deferred punishment in the Hereafter.
12:11 As for the deferred punishment,
12:13 It applies to one who swears about something he did not do, asserting that he did it,
12:17 Or about something he did do, asserting that he did not do it,
12:21 Intentionally uttering a falsehood.
12:23 The one who swears such an oath remains subject to Allah's will on the Day of Resurrection:
12:28 If He wills, He will punish him for it in the Hereafter,
12:31 And if He wills, He will pardon him out of His grace;
12:34 Nor is any worldly expiation required of him for it,
12:38 Because it is not among the oaths in which expiation can remedy a breach.
12:42 But as for the immediate expiation,
12:44 Whenever one breaches a binding oath, he is held liable for the expiation.
12:48 And Allah is All-Forgiving to His servants regarding the unintentional slips of their oaths,
12:53 All-Forbearing in not rushing punishment upon the people of disobedience for their sins.
12:59 “Those who forswear their wives must wait four months; then, if they change their mind, lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (2:226)
13:07 “Those who forswear their wives must wait four months; then, if they change their mind, lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (2:226)
13:14 For those who swear an oath to abstain from their wives,
13:20 There is a waiting period of four months;
13:23 If they return and abandon what they swore upon,
13:26 Resuming intimacy with them, then Allah is All-Forgiving for whatever occurred of falsehood in their oaths,
13:32 And Merciful toward them and others.
13:35 “And if they decide upon divorce (let them remember that) Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (2:227)
13:42 And if they resolve upon divorce and proceed to divorce them,
13:45 Then Allah is All-Hearing of their pronouncement of divorce when they issue it,
13:49 All-Knowing of what they bring upon them of what is lawful or unlawful.
13:56 “Women who are divorced shall wait, keeping themselves apart, three (monthly) courses. And it is not lawful for them that they should conceal that which Allah hath created in their wombs if they are believers in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands would do better to take them back in that case if they desire a reconciliation. And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in kindness, and men are a degree above them. Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (2:228)
14:05 “Women who are divorced shall wait, keeping themselves apart, three (monthly) courses.
14:18 In Allah and the Last Day.
14:24 “Women who are divorced shall wait, keeping themselves apart, three (monthly) courses.
14:33 “Women who are divorced shall wait, keeping themselves apart, three (monthly) courses.
14:40 “Women who are divorced shall wait, keeping themselves apart, three (monthly) courses.
14:48 Divorced women who experience menstruation and cycles of purity
14:54 Must wait concerning themselves for three intervals of purity,
14:57 With a period of purity separating each menstruation,
15:01 Which is contrary to counting the menstrual periods themselves as the prescribed wait.
15:06 It is unlawful for divorced women to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs of menses or pregnancy upon being divorced,
15:14 Intending thereby to invalidate their husbands' right of taking them back.
15:19 And the husbands of the divorced women have greater right to take them back during their waiting period, if they desire reconciliation.
15:28 Each spouse owes the other an obligation not to cause harm, equivalent to the right held over the other;
15:35 Yet men have a degree over women by virtue of their duty of leadership and financial provision,
15:40 And their pardoning of certain rights due to them from women.
15:44 And Allah is Mighty in His retribution against whoever disobeys His command,
15:48 Wise in all that He has ordained for His creation.
15:51 "Divorce is twice;"
15:55 "Then retain honorably or release with kindness."
16:03 “Divorce must be pronounced twice and then (a woman) must be retained in honour or released in kindness. And it is not lawful for you that ye take from women aught of that which ye have given them; except (in the case) when both fear that they may not be able to keep within the limits (imposed by) Allah. And if ye fear that they may not be able to keep the limits of Allah, in that case it is no sin for either of them if the woman ransom herself. These are the limits (imposed by) Allah. Transgress them not. For whoso transgresseth Allah's limits: such are wrong-doers.” (2:229)
16:17 "Lest they should fail to uphold the limits of Allah."
16:21 "And if you fear that they cannot keep the limits of Allah,"
16:25 “Divorce must be pronounced twice and then (a woman) must be retained in honour or released in kindness.
16:30 "These are the limits of Allah, so do not transgress them."
16:34 “Divorce must be pronounced twice and then (a woman) must be retained in honour or released in kindness.
16:44 The revocable divorce in which taking back the wife is permissible occurs twice;
16:49 Thereafter, the command upon taking them back after the second divorce is:
16:53 Either retaining them in an honorable manner,
16:55 Or releasing them gracefully
16:59 By issuing the third divorce so that she becomes irrevocably separated from them.
17:03 And it is not lawful for you, O men, if you wish to divorce your wives, to take back
17:10 Anything from what you gave them of their bridal dower,
17:13 Unless both of you fear failing to uphold the limits of Allah due to her discord,
17:18 So that it is feared she will abandon obedience to Allah regarding her husband's mandatory rights,
17:25 And it is feared the husband will fail to fulfill his obligations toward her.
17:29 If you fear that they will not maintain what Allah made obligatory upon both of them
17:34 Concerning the rights incumbent upon each spouse to treat the other with kindness,
17:40 There is no blame upon either of them for what the woman offers as ransom to free herself from her husband,
17:46 Nor is there any sin upon her husband in what he takes of that compensation.
17:50 These are the clear demarcations distinguishing what has been made lawful for you from what has been made unlawful, O people;
17:56 So do not overstep what I made lawful for you into what I made unlawful for you.
18:01 For whoever transgresses into what I made unlawful for him is indeed the wrongdoer who commits what he has no right to commit,
18:09 Placing a matter where it does not belong.
18:12 “And if he hath divorced her (the third time), then she is not lawful unto him thereafter until she hath wedded another husband. Then if he (the other husband) divorce her it is no sin for both of them that they come together again if they consider that they are able to observe the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah. He manifesteth them for people who have knowledge.” (2:230)
18:21 “And if he hath divorced her (the third time), then she is not lawful unto him thereafter until she hath wedded another husband. Then if he (the other husband) divorce her it is no sin for both of them that they come together again if they consider that they are able to observe the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah. He manifesteth them for people who have knowledge.” (2:230)
18:31 if both feel confident that they can maintain the limits ordained by Allah.
18:38 “And if he hath divorced her (the third time), then she is not lawful unto him thereafter until she hath wedded another husband. Then if he (the other husband) divorce her it is no sin for both of them that they come together again if they consider that they are able to observe the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah. He manifesteth them for people who have knowledge.” (2:230)
18:46 That wife of his is not lawful for him after the third divorce,
18:51 until she marries a husband other than the one who divorced her.
18:54 If this new husband divorces her after her irrevocable separation from the first,
19:01 then there is no blame on the woman and the first husband if they reunite through a new marriage contract,
19:07 provided they hold a sincere expectation that they will uphold what He has commanded them.
19:11 These are the matters that He has clarified to His servants regarding divorce and taking back wives;
19:16 He details and distinguishes them for a people who comprehend them once Allah has made them clear to them.
19:23 "And when you divorce women and they reach their term, retain them with kindness,"
19:35 “When ye have divorced women, and they have reached their term, then retain them in kindness or release them in kindness. Retain them not to their hurt so that ye transgress (the limits). He who doeth that hath wronged his soul. Make not the revelations of Allah a laughing-stock (by your behaviour), but remember Allah's grace upon you and that which He hath revealed unto you of the Scripture and of wisdom, whereby He doth exhort you. Observe your duty to Allah and know that Allah is Aware of all things.” (2:231)
19:43 “When ye have divorced women, and they have reached their term, then retain them in kindness or release them in kindness.
19:48 “When ye have divorced women, and they have reached their term, then retain them in kindness or release them in kindness.
19:54 “When ye have divorced women, and they have reached their term, then retain them in kindness or release them in kindness.
19:59 “When ye have divorced women, and they have reached their term, then retain them in kindness or release them in kindness.
20:10 “When ye have divorced women, and they have reached their term, then retain them in kindness or release them in kindness.
20:17 And when you, O men, divorce your wives,
20:21 and they reach their appointed term prescribed for them by the completion of their cycles,
20:26 then take them back in the permitted manner by bringing witnesses to the reconciliation before the waiting period ends,
20:32 or let them complete the remainder of their waiting period,
20:36 by fully fulfilling all of their rights incumbent upon you,
20:39 according to what He has obligated upon you concerning their mahr, mut'ah gift, and financial support,
20:44 and other such rights belonging to them.
20:47 And do not take them back merely to cause them harm,
20:50 so as to prolong for them the duration of their waiting periods,
20:54 or to reclaim from them part of what you had given them
20:58 by forcing them to seek khul' from you.
21:00 And whoever takes back his wife after divorcing her out of malice, so as to transgress the boundary of Allah,
21:06 has indeed wronged himself.
21:08 And do not treat the clear signs of Allah and His distinctions between His lawful and unlawful as an object of mockery and play,
21:15 for He has clearly explained to you in His revelation what is permitted to you regarding taking back a wife and what is not.
21:22 And remember the favor of Allah upon you through Islam,
21:25 and remember also what He has revealed to you of the Qur'an, and act upon it,
21:30 and remember what He has sent down to you of the Sunnahs that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, taught you.
21:37 He admonishes you through the Book that He has sent down to you.
21:41 And fear Allah,
21:43 and know that your Lord is fully aware of everything that you do,
21:48 and He will requite good with good,
21:52 and evil with evil.
21:54 “And when ye have divorced women and they reach their term, place not difficulties in the way of their marrying their husbands if it is agreed between them in kindness. This is an admonition for him among you who believeth in Allah and the Last Day. That is more virtuous for you, and cleaner. Allah knoweth; ye know not.” (2:232)
22:17 “And when ye have divorced women and they reach their term, place not difficulties in the way of their marrying their husbands if it is agreed between them in kindness. This is an admonition for him among you who believeth in Allah and the Last Day. That is more virtuous for you, and cleaner. Allah knoweth; ye know not.” (2:232)
22:26 “And when ye have divorced women and they reach their term, place not difficulties in the way of their marrying their husbands if it is agreed between them in kindness. This is an admonition for him among you who believeth in Allah and the Last Day. That is more virtuous for you, and cleaner. Allah knoweth; ye know not.” (2:232)
22:30 And Allah knows, while you do not know.
22:37 And when you divorce women and they reach their term, thus becoming irrevocably separated from you, do not distress them by preventing them, O guardians,
22:48 from remarrying their former husbands through a new contract,
22:52 seeking thereby to cause them harm, once the husbands and women have mutually agreed upon what is lawful
22:59 and permissible as a bridal gift for their intimacy, through an entirely new marriage contract.
23:06 This prohibition that I have placed upon you against hindering them is an admonition from Me
23:11 to whichever of you, O people, believes in Allah, singles Him out in worship, and affirms His lordship,
23:17 and believes in the Resurrection for recompense, reward, and punishment.
23:22 Remarrying their former husbands is better and more virtuous in the sight of Allah than their separation from them,
23:28 and purer for your hearts, their hearts, and their husbands' hearts from suspicion;
23:34 that is because, if mutual affection remains in the hearts of both the man and the woman,
23:40 one cannot be certain that it will not transgress into that which Allah has forbidden them,
23:45 nor can their guardians be safe from having suspicions cross their minds of which both parties might well be innocent.
23:53 For I know of the suitor's and the woman's hearts what you do not know of longing and love.
