0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:05 A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.
0:08 Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammar.
0:12 Surah al-A'raf.
0:17 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:23 “O Children of Adam! Look to your adornment at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. Lo! He loveth not the prodigals.” (7:31)
0:33 Indeed, He does not like the extravagant.
0:40 O children of Adam, take your adornment—your clothing and garments—at every mosque.
0:46 Eat from the good things that I have provided for you and made lawful for you.
0:50 And drink from the lawful beverages.
0:53 Do not be extravagant in food and drink, and do not consume what is forbidden.
0:58 Indeed, Allah does not love those who exceed the limits in what is lawful or forbidden.
1:04 Rather, He loves that one should declare lawful what He has made lawful, and declare forbidden what He has made forbidden.
1:09 That is the justice which He has commanded.
1:14 “Say: Who hath forbidden the adornment of Allah which He hath brought forth for His bondmen, and the good things of His providing? Say: Such, on the Day of Resurrection, will be only for those who believed during the life of the world. Thus do we detail Our revelations for people who have knowledge.” (7:32)
1:22 “Say: Who hath forbidden the adornment of Allah which He hath brought forth for His bondmen, and the good things of His providing? Say: Such, on the Day of Resurrection, will be only for those who believed during the life of the world. Thus do we detail Our revelations for people who have knowledge.” (7:32)
1:31 “Say: Who hath forbidden the adornment of Allah which He hath brought forth for His bondmen, and the good things of His providing? Say: Such, on the Day of Resurrection, will be only for those who believed during the life of the world. Thus do we detail Our revelations for people who have knowledge.” (7:32)
1:39 Say, O Muhammad, to these ignorant people who strip naked while circumambulating the House:
1:45 And who forbid for themselves the good things of provision:
1:49 Who has forbidden, O people, the adornment of Allah which He created for His servants,
1:54 That you should adorn yourselves with it and beautify yourselves with its clothing?
1:58 And the lawful provision from Allah which He has provided for His creation for their food and drink?
2:04 Say, O Muhammad, it is the adornment of Allah which He brought forth for His servants, and the good things of His provision,
2:11 For those who believed in Allah and His Messenger,
2:14 And followed what was sent down to you from your Lord in this world.
2:18 While those who disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and opposed the command of their Lord have shared in that [provision] in this world.
2:25 And it is exclusively for those who believed in Allah and His Messenger on the Day of Resurrection.
2:30 No one who disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger shall share it with them on that day.
2:36 Just as I have clarified to you what is obligatory for you regarding clothing, adornment, food, and drink,
2:42 So do I clarify all My proofs and arguments,
2:46 For a people who know what is clarified for them and understand what is distinguished for them.
2:55 “Say: My Lord forbiddeth only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are within, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with Allah that for which no warrant hath been revealed, and that ye tell concerning Allah that which ye know not.” (7:33)
3:05 “Say: My Lord forbiddeth only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are within, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with Allah that for which no warrant hath been revealed, and that ye tell concerning Allah that which ye know not.” (7:33)
3:16 “Say: My Lord forbiddeth only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are within, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with Allah that for which no warrant hath been revealed, and that ye tell concerning Allah that which ye know not.” (7:33)
3:27 Say, O Muhammad, my Lord has only forbidden immoralities—what is apparent of them, which is done openly, and what is hidden, which is done in secret;
3:36 And sin, and oppression against people without right;
3:40 And that you associate with Him in His worship partners for which He has not sent down any authority or proof for your association;
3:49 And that you say things about Allah, such as that He commanded you to strip naked and be unclothed for circumambulating the House,
3:55 And that He forbade you from eating these livestock which you have forbidden and left to roam,
4:01 And which you have designated as *wasa'il* and *hawami* [specific categories of sacred animals],
4:04 And other things that you do not know whether Allah forbade, commanded, or permitted,
4:11 So you attribute to Allah their prohibition, restriction, and command.
4:17 “And every nation hath its term, and when its term cometh, they cannot put it off an hour nor yet advance (it).” (7:34)
4:32 For every group that has gathered to deny the messengers of Allah, there is a time for the arrival of punishments upon them.
4:40 So when the time comes which Allah has set for their destruction, they will not delay by remaining in this world for a single hour of time,
4:49 Nor will they advance it ahead of the time which Allah has set for their destruction.
5:10 O children of Adam, if My messengers come to you from among yourselves, from your clans and tribes,
5:28 Reciting to you the verses of My Book and making known to you My proofs for the truth of what they have brought to you,
5:36 Then whoever among you believes in My verses, confirms them, and fears Allah—by acting upon what He commanded and refraining from what He forbade—
5:46 And rectifies his deeds, then there will be no fear upon them on the Day of Resurrection from the punishment of Allah when they arrive before Him,
5:53 Nor will they grieve for what they missed of their worldly life which they left behind, once they witness the honor of Allah that they witness there.
6:06 But those who denied Our verses and grew arrogant toward them—those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
6:20 As for those who denied My messengers, rejected My oneness, and grew arrogant toward confirming My proofs and arguments, they are those who will remain in the Fire of Hell, never to emerge from it.
6:34 “Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah or denieth Our tokens. (For such) their appointed portion of the Book (of destiny) reacheth them till, when Our messengers come to gather them, they say: Where (now) is that to which ye cried beside Allah? They say: They have departed from us. And they testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.” (7:37)
6:50 “Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah or denieth Our tokens. (For such) their appointed portion of the Book (of destiny) reacheth them till, when Our messengers come to gather them, they say: Where (now) is that to which ye cried beside Allah? They say: They have departed from us. And they testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.” (7:37)
7:01 It will be said, "Where are those you used to invoke besides Allah?" They will say, "They have strayed away from us," and they will testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.
7:18 Who is more mistaken in action and further in departing from the truth and correctness than one who fabricates a lie against Allah?
7:27 Saying, when he commits an immorality, "Allah commanded us to do it," or denying His proofs that indicate His oneness and the prophethood of His prophets.
7:38 Whoever does that, those will receive their share of the Book—what has been written for them in the Preserved Tablet of good and evil in this world,
7:49 Until Our messengers come to them to take their souls.
7:53 The messengers will say, "Where are those you used to invoke as protectors besides Allah and worship? They do not avert from you what has come to you of the command of Allah."
8:05 They will say, "Our protectors whom we used to invoke besides Allah have strayed away from us," and they took a path other than our path and abandoned us in our time of need for them.
8:17 The people will then testify against themselves that they were deniers of Allah and His oneness.
8:26 “He saith: Enter into the Fire among nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before you. Every time a nation entereth, it curseth its sister (nation) till, when they have all been made to follow one another thither, the last of them saith unto the first of them: Our Lord! These led us astray, so give them double torment of the Fire. He saith: For each one there is double (torment), but ye know not.” (7:38)
8:42 “He saith: Enter into the Fire among nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before you. Every time a nation entereth, it curseth its sister (nation) till, when they have all been made to follow one another thither, the last of them saith unto the first of them: Our Lord! These led us astray, so give them double torment of the Fire. He saith: For each one there is double (torment), but ye know not.” (7:38)
9:03 “He saith: Enter into the Fire among nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before you. Every time a nation entereth, it curseth its sister (nation) till, when they have all been made to follow one another thither, the last of them saith unto the first of them: Our Lord! These led us astray, so give them double torment of the Fire. He saith: For each one there is double (torment), but ye know not.” (7:38)
9:21 He will say to them, "Enter, O you who fabricated lies, among groups of nations that preceded you—those who have passed away before you from among the jinn and mankind—into the Fire."
9:33 Every time a group enters the Fire, it will curse the other group of its own religion, disowning it, until when they have all overtaken one another in the Fire and gathered therein,
9:47 The latter of them will say of the former—every nation that entered the Fire after the one before it, which preceded it and was its predecessor in misguidance—
9:56 They will say of their predecessors who were before them in the world, "Our Lord, these led us astray from Your path and invited us to worship other than You, so give them a double punishment from Your torment for our punishment."
10:12 Allah will say to them, "For all of you—your first and your last, your followers and those who were followed—is a double punishment, repeated upon them."
10:23 But you, O company of the people of the Fire, do not know the extent of what Allah has prepared for you of punishment.
10:31 That is why the later disbelieving nation asks for a double portion of it for its predecessor.
10:38 “And the first of them saith unto the last of them: Ye were no whit better than us, so taste the doom for what ye used to earn.” (7:39)
10:57 The first of every nation will say to the latter—those who were born after their time—"You have no superiority over us."
11:06 "For you have known what befell us of the punishment of Allah due to our disobedience and our disbelief in His verses after they came to us, and the messengers and warners came to you with that."
11:17 "Have you then turned in repentance to the obedience of Allah?" So the argument of the people will be exhausted, and they will be defeated, unable to provide an answer.
11:26 Allah will say to all of them, "Taste, all of you, O disbelievers, the punishment of Hell for what you used to earn in the world of sins and acts of disobedience."
11:39 “Lo! they who deny Our revelations and scorn them, for them the gates of heaven will nor be opened not will they enter the Garden until the camel goeth through the needle's eye. Thus do We requite the guilty.” (7:40)
11:55 “Lo! they who deny Our revelations and scorn them, for them the gates of heaven will nor be opened not will they enter the Garden until the camel goeth through the needle's eye. Thus do We requite the guilty.” (7:40)
12:07 And thus do We recompense the criminals.
12:13 Indeed, those who denied Our proofs and arguments and grew arrogant toward confirming them—the gates of heaven will not be opened for their souls when they depart from their bodies,
12:26 Nor will any word or deed of theirs ascend to Allah during their lives, because their deeds are foul, and these people will never enter Paradise,
12:37 Just as a camel cannot enter through the eye of a needle.
12:41 And thus do We reward those who committed crimes in the world with the painful punishment in the Hereafter.
12:49 “Theirs will be a bed of hell, and over them coverings (of hell). Thus do We requite wrong-doers.” (7:41)
13:04 For those who denied Our verses and grew arrogant toward them,
13:09 There is from Hell a bed—that upon which one sits and lies—
13:14 And from above them a covering that envelops and covers them from above.
13:19 And thus do We reward and recompense those who wronged themselves,
13:23 By earning for it from the wrath of Allah what it cannot bear.
13:28 “But (as for) those who believe and do good works - We tax not any soul beyond its scope - Such are rightful owners of the Garden. They abide therein.” (7:42)
13:40 Those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.
13:50 And those who believed in Allah and His Messenger,
13:53 And did what Allah commanded them to do, so they obeyed Him,
13:57 And avoided what He forbade them from,
13:59 We do not burden any soul with deeds except what it can bear, so there is no hardship in it.
14:05 These are the people of Paradise; they will remain therein,
14:10 Never to be removed from it, nor will its bliss be taken from them.
14:27 “And We remove whatever rancour may be in their hearts. Rivers flow beneath them. And they say: The praise to Allah, Who hath guided us to this. We could not truly have been led aright if Allah had not guided us. Verily the messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth. And it is cried unto them: This is the Garden. Ye inherit it for what ye used to do.” (7:43)
14:35 “And We remove whatever rancour may be in their hearts. Rivers flow beneath them. And they say: The praise to Allah, Who hath guided us to this. We could not truly have been led aright if Allah had not guided us. Verily the messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth. And it is cried unto them: This is the Garden. Ye inherit it for what ye used to do.” (7:43)
14:41 “And We remove whatever rancour may be in their hearts. Rivers flow beneath them. And they say: The praise to Allah, Who hath guided us to this. We could not truly have been led aright if Allah had not guided us. Verily the messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth. And it is cried unto them: This is the Garden. Ye inherit it for what ye used to do.” (7:43)
14:51 And We will remove from the hearts of these people
14:54 Whatever was in them of hatred and enmity that existed between some of them in the world toward others.
15:00 They will not envy one another for anything with which Allah has favored some of them.
15:06 Rivers of Paradise will flow beneath them.
15:09 And those who believed will say when they are admitted to Paradise,
15:13 "Praise be to Allah who guided us to the deeds
15:17 That earned us what we are in of the honor of Allah."
15:21 "And we would not have been guided to this
15:23 Had Allah not guided us to it and favored us with His grace and bounty."
15:29 "By Allah, there came to us in the world,"
15:31 And those who are in the Fire, "the messengers of our Lord with the truth,"
15:36 Of the news regarding Allah's promise to those who obey Him,
15:40 And His threat to those who disobey Him.
15:42 And a caller will call out, "O you people,"
15:46 "This is Paradise which My messengers in the world used to tell you about."
15:51 "Allah has made you inherit it from those who denied His messengers,"
15:55 "Because of your confirming them and your obedience to your Lord."
16:00 “And the dwellers of the Garden cry unto the dwellers of the Fire: We have found that which our Lord promised us (to be) the Truth. Have ye (too) found that which your Lord promised the Truth? They say: Yea, verily. And a crier in between them crieth: The curse of Allah is on evil-doers,” (7:44)
16:06 “And the dwellers of the Garden cry unto the dwellers of the Fire: We have found that which our Lord promised us (to be) the Truth. Have ye (too) found that which your Lord promised the Truth? They say: Yea, verily. And a crier in between them crieth: The curse of Allah is on evil-doers,” (7:44)
16:16 “And the dwellers of the Garden cry unto the dwellers of the Fire: We have found that which our Lord promised us (to be) the Truth. Have ye (too) found that which your Lord promised the Truth? They say: Yea, verily. And a crier in between them crieth: The curse of Allah is on evil-doers,” (7:44)
16:24 They will say, "Yes," and a caller will announce among them, "The curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers."
16:34 And the people of Paradise will call out to the people of the Fire,
16:37 "O people of the Fire,"
16:39 "We have found what our Lord promised us to be true in the world upon the tongues of His messengers,"
16:44 "Of the reward for faith."
16:47 "Have you found what your Lord promised upon their tongues,"
16:51 "Regarding disbelief in Him and His disobedience, to be a true punishment?"
16:55 The people of the Fire will answer them, "Yes,"
16:59 "We have found what our Lord promised to be true."
17:03 Then a caller will call out that the wrath of Allah and His displeasure are upon those who disbelieved in Him,
17:09 Those who obstruct the path of Allah and seek to make it crooked, and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter.
17:26 Those who disbelieved in Allah and obstructed the path of Allah,
17:30 And attempted to change the religion of Allah and alter it,
17:34 And they are deniers of the establishment of the Hour and the resurrection in the Hereafter.
17:41 And between them is a partition.
17:45 And on the Heights are men who recognize everyone by their marks.
17:52 “Between them is a veil. And on the Heights are men who know them all by their marks. And they call unto the dwellers of the Garden: Peace be unto you! They enter it not although they hope (to enter).” (7:46)
18:00 “Between them is a veil. And on the Heights are men who know them all by their marks. And they call unto the dwellers of the Garden: Peace be unto you! They enter it not although they hope (to enter).” (7:46)
18:05 And between Paradise and the Fire is a barrier.
18:08 And on the Heights—which is every elevated part of the earth—
18:12 Are men who recognize everyone from the people of Paradise by their marks,
18:17 Which is the whiteness of their faces and the radiance of bliss upon them.
18:22 And they recognize the people of the Fire by their marks,
18:25 Which is the blackness of their faces and the blueness of their eyes.
18:30 So when they see the people of Paradise, they will call out to them,
18:33 "Peace be upon you; the security of Allah from His punishment has descended upon you."
18:37 And the people of Paradise hope to enter it,
18:40 Though they have not yet entered it.
18:43 And it is said that the people of the Heights said what they said,
18:47 Before the people of the Heights enter Paradise,
18:50 While they are hoping to enter it.
